I do not think I will ever tow a trailer that big, at least not with my F150, so I saved the extra $50.

The P3 has a couple of selectable sub-menus to allow further customization of towing setup.

I did some research and the wheelbase of the new Sequoia is longer than that of the Suburban.

Too bad a diesel option isn't available but fuel economy with the 6 speed transmission is pretty decent and much better than the Suburban.

I'm going to go for a test drive at some point.

In an earlier post some mentioned the chevy/gmc 6.0L. I would highly recommend you do not buy a tow vehicle with that motor. when paired with the 4 speed auto it can be brutal in hills. A friend had a GMC 1500HD with and towed his ST1 vette in a 24 ft enclosed and it was painfull. he quickly sold that truck and bought a diesel.

I have no experience with the Toyotas but I tow with an 06 Titan and have had a great experience. The torque that 5.6L puts out with the 5 speed auto makes a nice pairing. I have no problem with hills and I live in Utah and race regularly in Colorado so I go over plenty.
I am not sure I would tow a 24' enclosed with it but I would tow a 20'.

I think I ran with you at Spring Mountain in 06= why are you selling your 911?

Hmm, my quick search reveals for wheelbase: Sequoia 118" vs. Suburban 130"

(My Excursion, king of the SUV tow trucks, has a 137" wheelbase - and its diesel... )

Oops. I guess I looked at the Yukon (116") and not Yukon XL.

toyota.ca shows the Sequoia has a 122" wheelbase vs. the 130" in the Suburban. This compares with the 133" wb of the GMC regular cab/long box pickup I usually use and the 106" of my Honda Pilot DD.

Too bad the Suburban can't tow squat.

I want to get a new DD at some point that will be able to tow more than the Pilot but be relatively easy to live with.

I have access to a GMC 2500HD Duramax and a Ford F350 with the 7.3 Powerstroke to haul big stuff.

I'd prefer an SUV day to day. Maybe I should just wait for the Suburban HD that is supposedly coming next year as an early 2010.

Chris,

I was seriously considering a Suburban before buying my truck. I bought an '04 F150 FX4 SuperCab new and am very happy with it. 145" wheelbase makes for a very stable platform. The 5.4 had 365 ft-lbs of torque. While no match for any of the big three turbo-diesels, it tows an open trailer with car (approx. 5000 lbs) with a fully loaded bed with relative ease. I also occasionally tow an 8000 lbs. 24' enclosed trailer with a load distributing hitch. Not as easy but no real problems either.

By comparison to an SUV, it does have back seats and doors (smaller suicide) which is fine for another couple going to dinner around town, and I have a locking fiberglass tonneau cover for secure stowage. If I had to do it again, I'd get the full four-door (SuperCrew) with the 6.5 ft. bed. When I bought mine, the SuperCab was only available with the 5.5' bed. For me, this combo wins over an SUV because I use it as a truck sometimes (haul around stuff you would not want in the back of your Suburban), and over a 3/4 ton diesel because it is a softer, quieter, more comfortable ride, and over both because it is significantly less expensive.

Conversely, our SUV is the perfect towing platform for us because we need space to: haul the dog, have the 3rd row for the co-pilot to be sleeping (we do several 16+ hour non-stop trips each year), seat two kids, and haul a lot of stuff inside, while still towing 8-10k# safely and comfortably. I can't think of another truck that can do this like the diesel Excursion. I hope someone comes out with a new "super SUV diesel" at some point in the future so that when it is time to replace our Excursion we have an option.

It is beginning to be clear to me why there is more than one vehicle type offered for sale............

I've seen the prototype. It's real.

As per the GM guy that was at the Louisville show, the 4.5L Duramax will be first used in the 1500 series trucks starting in 2009.

Hmmm, 20mpg from a big SUV would be great, but I wouldn't mind the >600 ft/lb big diesel engine in the SUV, either... Good to know there may be Excursion replacement options in the future. Not that I'm in a rush, Excursion only has 120k+ miles on it...
