Default Q: re: Equal Restraints

Just put a seat in on driver's side. I run mostly solo, with an occassional passenger. Any thoughts on equal restraint for the passenger side? My wife is not going to like sitting in a race seat much less me buying another one...

Just thinking out loud.

I don't know if you race or DE or both, but I believe that most organizations (PCA for sure) require that you provide an "equal" seat for the passenger. In the case of DE events, that would mean that you would fail tech if you do not have the mirror image ( seat / harness) for the instructor.

You also didn't mention if you put in a 5 point or a 6 point. Starting this year PCA does not allow 4 points or the use of 5 & 6 points where the harness is not routed through specific design "holes" for the harness in the body of the seat. Of course your car would pass tech if you had done nothing. LOL

If your wife is only going to be happy with the stock seat you have two options:

1. Change the passenger seat out to match your seat everytime you do an event (which is usually not a big deal)

or

2. Do your DE event with the stock seat... (not as good as the above option IMHO)

I have 6 point going in. The seats do have pass throughs. I did pass tech already 'cause I didn't have the racing seat yet. But for the next DE it looks like the money pit wins again

Good option. To make this work, I just called the race shop and they are going to get a seat "pre-set up" that will just bolt in. I'll just have to do the old switcheroo before every DE...

I switch one of my cars out all the time and have it down to about 20 minutes.....you'll be glad you did.

Safety first.

FWIW, I just ordered a second set of seat belt buckles that I can pre-attach to the race seats. Seems like it's easier than swapping those at the same time as well. Sunset got me set up. Don't forget to order bolts if you buy 'em.

If you are an instructor you can just take out the passenger seat entirely.

Maybe I look at things a little too simplistically, but equal means .........EQUAL! Websters has a very good definition of what equal is, you may want to look there.

I think if you drive solo, nobody is going to care about what you have in the passenger seat. So, if it's just you at the track, warn whomever might take a ride with you that you don't have equal restraints. If they don't like it, they don't need to ride. If you plan to take your wife as a passenger, that's between you and her.

If your wife is still a student and needs to take an instructor, then I think you can probably leave her with regular stock seats and put a race seat (with 5 point harnesses) in the passenger seat. I doubt many instructors are going to complain about better restraints for themselves.

If you plan on only driving solo also plan on advancing very slowly. Even after you are in non instructed groups ask an instructor to ride with you now and agian. At least once a weekend.

Equal means equal in function, not color, brand and the like. Shell seat with 5 point in drivers side means shell seat with 5 point (or better) in pass side too. You can use a $900 fitted shell in the drivers side and a $250 off the bottom shelf in the pass side as long as they both pass the rules for type and install method.
