so to help everyone feel good I use the 450 only locally and use a 2003 Monaco Windsor with a 370 turbo Cummins... tow a 24 foot with a 2000 cup car.. about 8000 lbs... I average 6 MPG... so everything is relative... I love them both

It has been a totally solid haul vehicle though. When I drove with a different flatbed trailor to Florida hauling one car only and the hills in Kentucky and Georgia slowed me to 45 in some places.
On flat ground holding 75 with the big trailer is no problem. I wish I had the 4.30 rear end because I think it would help Mpg and exhaust temperature.
I am chipped and have to use a pyro so as to not blow my motor. I try to keep the exhaust at 1250 or below. Aluminum starts melting at 13??
Do you recommend chipping? My 7.3 PSD is out of warranty...

Is it odd that most of the posters to this thread have Fords, or is it just the thread title that attracted Ford owners?

ok, i'll be the black sheep -- i tow with a 2003 Chevy 2500HD Silverado 4x4, extended cab, 8' bed. engine is a 8.1 liter Vortec gasser, with Allison 5 speed auto tranny. gears are 4.10s. truck tows my Pace enclosed without breaking a sweat (its not huge; its around 10k fully loaded with all my spares, etc). i typically tow at 75-85 mph, mostly longer trips to VIR, CMP, Mid O, WGI, etc. i average about 9.5 towing like that; empty driving around commuting about 11-13 mpg. i have about 49k towing miles on the truck so far; zero defects.

its a great rig to tow with; and i like being able to hop in on a cold day, start it up, and drive away immediately without all the clacking, smoke, and hesitation of a diesel. gas around here is hovering around $2.90 a gal, so its a little less than diesel. and the bargains you can get on a gasser can be huge; the dealer practically gave this one away to us for $26,900, brand new (its totally loaded with all the options, except leather).

the only down side is that its max towing rating is 13k lbs. not as much as most of the diesels nowadays.

Maybe that Ford is consumerizing the "over" 1 ton market. For GM, I don't see Topkick's at the Chevy or GMC dealer. Some, I'm sure, but for the most part you're over at a commercial truck place.

Saw a neat line of Haulmark RV's built on truck chassis at an RV show last week

I only ask as there are LOTS of Fords around, but Consumer Reports liked the Chevy better and the family likes the Toyota Tundra better. No flames, please!

06 Silverado 2500 HD ext. cab/short bed with Duramax 360HP / 650 TQ and Allison 6spd, get between 16-18 around town, 11-13 towing at 75MPH avg.. pulls like a freight train, is quiet and comfy..

Why go with a F-450 when a F-250 7.3L PSD will tow 15,000#s?

We get 13 MPG towing close to 15,000#s (12,000#, 3 horse slant and three horses)

Would be funny to see a Tundra hooked up to my trailer with two cars and all the gear.......

And as far as the 7.3's go, sure they were great in their day. But where are you going to go down to the 2003 Ford store and pick one up? Best case you'll find a decent one with not too many miles, and at an obscenely high price relative to new. Then there's the tax aspect of new v. used, wives who question buying old stuff, etc etc.

Never said any of this makes sense!

I have a 1998 Ram 2500 with the Cummins 24V Diesel, I get 18mpg around town and 15 when towing. I do tow a Trailex with a 2800lb car - so not much load. Since the Race car is for sale so is the tow vehicle - the classified is on PCa.org and I will post on rennlist later tonight.

1992 968 Firehawk (For Sale)
1998 Dodge 2500 Diesel (For Sale)

and i'll see what else in the garage I can sell (lol)

OK I just traded a 2001 3500 Dodge for the 450 .. the 450 was for the testosterone.... certainly not necessary for most tows... but I just had to have it.. it is awesome... my son just bought a 2008 250 and it will do almost everything my 450 will( well almost) .... as to what most of us want to do... I would not buy a Dodge again until they prove themselves... I almost bought a GMC 350.. but emotion sent me over to the Ford 450.... size.... macho .. whatever you want to say.... I would not recommend a Dodge... and the GMC with the Duramax and Allison is awesome but not up to the 450.. but certainly more than adequate in most situations.... tough decision at least I had a very difficult time..
