Default Hargett vs RS shifter for G50?

In addition to losing weight this winter, my car's transmission is being redone. One thing I hate about it now is the difficulty I have with sloppy 2nd to 3rd shifts when coming out of corners, especially when the transmission is getting hot. I'll be going with solid transmission and engine mounts this time around (currently have stock tranny and RS engine mounts) but one other reasonable improvement would be to get rid of the sloppy linkage from the stock G50 5-speed and switch to something better by design - the RS linkage or the Hargett that use Heim metal joints instead of rubber.

So, has anyone got direct experience with both? What is your preference? Does the shorter throw of the Hargett also mean a shorter distance side-to-side (making the selection of 1st, 3rd or 5th more difficult)?

Whatever you do, get rid of the 2 plastic cup joints on the fore stabilizer arm. They fail. Not sure if the RS setup ditches those, but I know the Weltmeister kit used spherical joints instead.

The Hargett G50 shifter is very nice, I really like how it repositions the shifter further back so it is easier to reach 3rd/5th when strapped in. It shifts nicely and the throw has been reduced but not too much. I thought it would take a while to adapt to the Hargett but it felt natural from the first time I used it. That said I don't think it is an option for you - you should check with Mark Hargett but I believe his G50 shifter is designed for 911 trans tunnels only and will not fit your 964. I know this was the case earlier this year when we tried to put one on an RSA.

FWIW - I had the Fabcar shifter on my G50/52 and loved it...

The Hargett is a great shifter, very precise and positioned much better that a stock stick. You very quickly get used to (and grow to love) how much shorter and tighter the shifting is. No experience with the RS stuff..

Hot shifting troubles have been noted here before with 993's as well. Symptoms being trans hard to shift or not able to shift after ~30 minuted on-track. Some have removed the plastic trans cover to help battle this trouble when others had trans work done.

DJF1 had similar trouble and had a low-dollar part replaced in the internal shift mechanism that ultimately cured the hot shifting problem. I dont know exactly which part it was. This is from some time ago.

The G50 trans in our 88 locked up a few times but only when two drivers were sharing the car at the track. We installed an external cooler (heat exchanger, pump, etc) and have never had a problem since.

Cory: Thanks for the note regarding use in the 964, I was afraid of that having seen only post with folk in 930's or similar older tubs (and not having the tunnel of a 964).

Chris: I'll search Danny's posts to see what I can find. I wanted something simple/bolt in. I've discussed the problem regarding how it happens once the transmission gets hot with others in the past.

The car goes in to the shop for further transformation tomorrow. I've given up on finding a good used transmission to rebuild, so a G50/32 is on order (there's one available in Germany). It will have a cooler added to it.

As I said above, we ordered one to fit into an RSA about 6 months ago and it would not work because it was designed for the 911 trans tunnel. We returned it. The shifter will not work for 964/993 or any of the 6 speeds. Call Mark Hargett if you want to be sure (760)598-3009.

Does it not work because of the way it's mounted on the tunnel? Can it be adapted?

I have tentatively decided to go with the Fabcar G50 shifter (for the 964/993). We'll see what it's like in late Feb when the car is ready to go again.

Website says 6 speed G 50. Was your experience with 993? I am interested in any experience anybody has had.

I ended up having a Fabcar shifter installed. It's great, but it took some fabrication work to make it so.
