Oil Cooler flushing

My engine grenaded at the Summit Point Club Race (probably the #2 rod bearing). My engine rebuild process is going well and I have a question for you folks. I run an external mocal oil cooler that uses a sandwich place takeoff - the 944OilCooling kit. Since there's probably lots of little metal bits floating around my engine in the oil, can the oil cooler be flushed and saved, or should I just consider it part of the cost of the rebuild and buy another one?

If you have one of the not so cheap coolers you can try Langfried Ultrasonic Cleaning. (310) 327-8930 They are in Carson CA and are FAA cert shop from what I have read. I have used them on some cheap and some not cheap coolers and they came back looking new inside and out. ports pluged and vacuum packed. The motors I put the coolers back on are still running fine but YMMV. Last set through was one 356/912 stock and a 19 row Mocal for $70.

Thanks Kurt, a new replacement Mocal cooler is 130 + shipping so in the grand scheme of things (ie the cost of racing) compared with 70 for a cleaning I think I just go with a new one.

I talked to the guys that do the FAA rated work and the methods use are not just fill and flush or heat and eat with acid they use some very advanced methods, equpment and final testing. They are not "Moe's radator and used tire shop".
