Great stuff thanks for sharing. I remember those days well when racing was at its finest.
My friend and I used to attend many races back in the 70's they were all good compared to today.
He enjoyed it so much he even collects a few and drives them on occasion here is one of his toys.

Will he be my friend too?

I think that is an early McLaren. The Lola T70 had intakes right off the front of the rear clamshell. While the angle is difficult, the Lola nose was also less stubby. AS

Maybe it is the photo angle of the orange car pictures, but it is difficult to match up with any of my pictures from '65 on (early USRRC through Can-Am '73). The cut of the door top lines doesn't look like anything I have. And now that I look more closely, the leading edge of the doors is not Lola T70 like.
Cobalt???

It is a very rare one of 3 1966 SR-3 Hayman Engineering Can Am car. Unfortunately, not a great racing history but a rare early first season car. The car had great potential but not the backing needed to compete against the big boys.
My friend had it fully restored and had to put extensive work into stiffening the car to accommodate the new suspension components and tire compounds of today.
He drives it in historic races but its value is high and exceedingly rare. I will say the early days of Can Am were great but I always loved watching Alan Jones and Al Holbert go at it in the late 70's. I always loved watching them go at it and Jones was still one of the sickest drivers in the wet of any driver i can remember. When it rained he would just walk away from the pack. I have tons of pictures I need to scan from those days.
BTW I have not driven the car but my friend owns many Porsche's a C5R vette and an F40 amongst others and he says this is the true "E" ticket ride. So I think that says enough.

Can Am ran two series. The original series was from 1966 to 1974. The later series Can Am II was from 1977 to 1986 which at that time was called the C.A.T. series for Can Am Teams. The biggest crowds were drawn to the original series in the late 1960s.
Not to put you to sleep with details, but 2008 is the 50th anniversary of Lola , who won the inaugural 1966 championship with 5 out of 6 wins with the T70,and there is a reunion at Road America in July that will also feature a Can Am reunion. Promises to be great fun.
The second series Can Am began with converted Formula 5000 cars with full bodywork, but make no mistake, these cars were very fast with injected Chevys and the line up of drivers was very impressive with Jackie Ickx, Brian Redman, Alan Jones, Bobby Rahal, etc.
Please consider coming to Road America. I think you would enjoy it. It is called the Kohler International Challenge (previously the BRIC).
Also, Phil Hill drove the Chaparrals as well as Jim Hall.
The above car is not a T70. This is a T70.
