Default SCCA Class question

Good Evening,
What class would a 1988 924S run in? Also, what else runs in that class and do you think it would be competitive? Thanks. - Jay

For club racing ITS is probably the best bet. Min weight is 2550 w/driver. If you want a complete list of the competition go to www.scca.com and you can download the improved touring rulebook. In the North East ITS is a very competitive class. Personally Id look at 944 cup or GTS w/ NASA if you want to be competitive. Hopefully Ill be running my 924S with 944 cup next year.

It depends on what modifications you've made to it.

ITS - You'll run against 3-series BMW's, RX-7's, Nissan Z cars, oddball Miatas who don't want to run Spec Miata. You'll probably be mid pack with a good car, a great car and driver might run up front.

EP - Hondas, RX-7's and Miatas. I don't know if anyone has fully developed a 924s or 944, I don't think you'll be competitive.

GT2 or GT3, slap some flared fenders to make it look like a 944, it won't matter because unless you're prepared to drop a ton of money into the car you won't be competitive.

I think it would fit in ITS but you'd need to check the GCR. In the NERRC/NARRC ITS races up at NHIS there have been a few very competitive 944's and your car is the same but narrower(?) so that might be the best class to shoot for. You'd run against RX-7's and BMW 3 series (not M3's). They are older generations of those cars. I'm not up on Mazda and BMW's enough to give you the model number. If you really want to know if it would be competitive just look up the times on mylaps.com for the last NERRC/NARRC races at NHIS. I'm guessing you need something like a 1:16 running the south oval.

Not sure about EP classification but to run in GT2 you'd have to figure out how to flare it out to get 275's on the front and 335's on the back and 400HP out of the motor...without a turbo...

If all else fails you can run in ITE....

924S/944's can be somewhat competitive in ITS, but it costs a fortune. Jon Milidge from somewhere in the Northeast is the Guru for 944's. It really needs to be in ITA, but that ever going to happen. It is almost by itself in PCA Class I. That would probably be the best place. You have to gut the car for ITS, but can't gut it for PCA I. So you have to make up your mind. It ain't competitive in both sanctioning bodies.

Thanks everyone! I am more interested running in SCCA since that is the club that all of my friends run with. ITS is where I thought I would running with it. I am looking to get into Miata racing, but I can't afford to do what I want with that. If I just cage and gut the 924 then I can run mid pack and learn for a year before moving into a Miata. Thanks everyone!

I am almost positive that 924 is an earl 924. I think that is why it runs in ITB.

Look at that, I answered my own question!!!!!!!

Yep. From fastest to slowest: ITR ITS ITA ITB ITC.

Just a fair warning, ITS is a very fast class. The Northeast hass a very active ITS field, so I wouldnt expect to run mid pack just from gutting the car. If you want more info in Improved Touring, try www.improvedtouring.com

That'd be me! Yes, the 2.0L (NA) 924 is the ITB car - '76-82. I think it's definitely more competitive in ITB than the 924S is in ITS. We do have an ITS 924S here I've been helping to get going, he's stll a bit down in both prep level and experience, but doing well. They're both great cars to get going in and build your racing skills, but the S will ultimately of course be more expensive and less competitive (as it stands now).

Of course, there's also the question of what's running in your area; ITB is strong here in the midwest (GL Div and CenDiv), but not quite as strong in NE. Then again, it is still active; in the Pac NW, it's practically non-existent!

Gotta add pics... here's our two ITB 924's...

And my teammate:

I am interested in looking into what it would take to get the car into ITA then if at all possible.

I looked through the GCR's and I could find what the difference between ITS and ITA are. Is it just weight?
