Not to hijack this thread but I bought one of these last week to use at Barber this past weekend (Hero3). Here are some of my impressions.

First, video quality was very good as seen in the video that was previously posted. I mounted the camera on my camera mount (rollbar) using the wrist strap that comes with the unit; no problems with that setup at all.

For downloading, I just removed the 2GB memory and plugged it into the laptop, takes about 4 minutes to transfer.

I played with the recorder in my garage and it does not work very well in limited light. Also, the viewfinder is the pits. Battery life is very low, I went through two sets af AAA's this weekend and only recorded 4 20 minute sessions.

Overall, I'm happy with the camera for use in the car.

I believe that's the camera... So the batteries won't last for a full 4GB of recording?

The group buy thread was probably black holed because the original poster is not a sponsor.

Lemming, do you have a picture of the camera mounted on the roll bar with the strap? There is no movement of the camera, and once it's set it's all good? What about vibration with that type of mounting, is the video clear of vibration, etc?

Thanks!

It's "Go-Pro" model Hero 3.

Google shows a lot of places to buy one at ~$130.00.

I do get some movement of the camera but it's not that bad, especially for the first attemp. I'm trying to upload to rennpository now, but it's not taking the entire file for some reason (32mb).

Sadly, I can't find a place that has it in stock in North NJ...

Not to highjack this thread but....on the subject of low cost cameras... the Aiptek MPVR ($120-$135 on line) is a great option. I don't own one but had done some research and it supposedly rocks and the in-car vid I saw on forums looked good. It's rechargeable and Gary, it has a threaded mount.

I saw them in stock at Target the other day.

There is also an alkaline version for under $100.

I just got one (Go-Pro) delivered this weekend ($150 including delivery) and so far it's very easy to use. Now I needa 2GB memery card and some rechargable batteries and we'll try it out at the track. Very simple plug-n-play with my iMac.

I saw one at the track this weekend that was mounted to the holes for the front license plate bracket. I bet that was a pretty cool angle.

hmm is there any sort of 12V power adapter for it? I'm seriously looking into the Hero, but I'd like to know more about its resolution.

I have the Aiptek IS-DV2 and a windshield suction mount. I got it at circuit city on sale. The normal price is $80. Solid state camera, batteries are AA so they last a little longer. I used one set of AAs per day. The camera is really light - even with batteries.

The camera takes pretty good video, but the mic isn't the greatest. Could be the location though. Way better than the $80 price in my opinion, but nowhere near the quality of my 3CCD DV camera...

Here are some links to the videos I took with it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrEpfVV14gc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WNDc1PKqT7M

Here are the only downsides I've found:
*The LCD display has to be open for the camera to record.
*The video is in some Microsoft compressed format. Not really a problem if you have up-to-date video editing software

Also, at the last DE someone had a sweet Samsung with external lens:

Seemed like a good option, but for the $, I'm really pleased with my Aiptek.

Here's the vid from session 3 on Sunday (NASA Time Trials; TTB). I have the cam volume set to "Lo" for windy/loud conditions and yes, it was loud considering I ran an open pipe on Sunday afternoon

I had to reduce the length and size of the video to put on Rennpository so the quality is slightly reduced compared to the AVI files on my computer.

For speed references, I have my RPM light set to 6800rpm, which converts to 86 and 117 mph for 3 and 4th gear respectively. I set my personal best in this session; a 1:43.2xx. I was told that I beat that time in the 4th session (1:42.xxx), but I have yet to see the official results)

EDIT: Mylaps is showing a 1:42.905!!!
