No jet pilot here, but I learned to fly gliders before I learned to drive and I've found it somewhat useful even all these years later with this DE stuff - "seat of the pants" feel, "eyes up", and "smoothness".

Glad you had a GREAT day!
Waitwaitwaitwait. Flying gliders? So why aren't you driving a momentum car now?

In my experience, I have found that ex-fighter pilots (and pilots in general) and those with serious motorcyle experience make the best students. I suspect this is because both groups a) are used to speed, b) take activities like this seriously, c) have likely received and are used to coaching/critiques.

Ha!

Think driving a car is a bit simpler than flying a fighter jet? They've got lots of brain left unused learning HPDE. An "easier" student there could not be.

Fighter pilots (pilots in general), ski racers, motorcycle racers, sailors. Pretty easy to teach them most of the time. They have feel.

Evidently I haven't had the best pilots then... I've instructed 3 different pilots (2 of them AF fighter types) and they just didn't get it. 1 of them did do well, but it took a day or so, the other 2, I just didn't have any hope at all for them...

I raced on off-road motorcycles (Bultaco forever!), must be why I have such uncanny abilities... of course that was 30 years ago.

Failed Kamikazi pilots don't count.

I only ran Enduros... we considered Motocross to be the Nascar of off-road racing.

Yes Sir....Matador 6 Days rider here, and every once in a while an Alpina for fun...no Pursangs for me! Also Husky 8 speeds, a couple of Pentons and a CZ. Mostly across Eastern and Western Washington State 30 years ago.

(yes we turned off stability management system).
James, you might want to reconsider turning off stability management system with any green student. No matter how "gifted" he was, his lack of seat time on the track can come back to bite you big time on the butt.
