I'm glad JR Gordon's story has a happy ending.

For those of you not familiar with California's laws, traffic school will get the ticket taken off his record (no points, no insurance impact), and can be done in a couple of hours online.

This is in response to the first reply after my post - taken a while to type up - dinner time here.

Before you accuse us of showboating and endangering lives (except our own, which I firmly believe I am entitled to do) I will explain how it was done.

Closed road - carefully selected for the excercise as part of the 40th Anniversary celebrations a few years ago - 3 lanes wide with a cop car at each end. (The club does some charitable work, and the cops always help us out with escorts and favours etc)

Pic taken by mounted camera on automatic (done for a TV show) - no way am I taking my hands off at that speed - the scenery goes by quickly at that speed

Can I control it if something breaks - I doubt it, unless it's a headlamp or some such, but we imported the factory mechanics from Italy specially to do the inspections before.

As to being reckless on the road - nope - I keep speed for the track exclusively these days - l leave taking liberies on the road to other road users, and get really pissed with them when they do (especially so because I cycle 300km a week, and other road users are the biggest danger)

Interesting you give me a hard time about risk, without asking how it was done, or what risks were taken - I can't really fault your concerns though - I ABSOLUTELY don't reccomend doing this except with some pre-planning to avoid the avoidable - this took us 4 months to arrange, and cost us some.

And the person who came past - well - he can be an *** sometimes - see below.

Well, that seems to be the right way to do it. Unfortunately, for the one person who does it the proper way (and I hope there was safety personnel there too), 999 other bozos just go out on the road and let her rip.

Hope it was thrilling!

Maybe Texas is odd, but you can't be arrested for just going over the speed limit...

first, i'm really glad v12 elaborated on the setup. i think its important that it be fully disclosed that was a set up environment, closed highway, etc. There are a lot of people who would just read that post, see that picture, and even if you ahd disclosed it, one might try to do the same, to top you.

that being said, at 200mph you have zero room for error, hiccup, goof, slip, failure .

here's my final point: most people fail to appreciate the risks or downside potential in investments, in life. "stocks never go down" "its 4.00/share, cant go lower".

They go lower. You are probably a very success, detailed, thorough person for unless you inherited themoney, or stole it (in which case, you're probably a good thief<G>), you had do good stuff to afford those kind of cars.
but the weak link isnt you...its the lowest bidder who provided the allow fro the rim, or the frame, ..or again, some momo who rushed to get home and failed to torque the suspension right.

we read all the time about tragic deaths at high speeds. one could die cross the street but you measureably increase the odds at 200mph. 100? not fast enough...when is fast enough? when the car physically is at its VERY limit? a place it is not built to remain but only visit.

lfie is good. your cars are amazing. friends and family are whats its all about. 200mph is silly and an excursion to that extreme could be the death of you. literally.

ok, i've sai dmy peace. to each is ones' own. back to the fun.

Larry - Lets just say it was an experience - going to be hard to get another chance (besides that car has been sold) and it's replacement is not as quick. There was a rescue chopper around with everything and the kitchen sink on board - sponsored by an insurance company.

Anyone who wants to trie this should calculate how far you have to be on the brakes to come to a stop from these speeds - about 400m of maximum braking is my calculation for that car - try it on a public road with other people around driving regular speeds - I GUARANTEE you WILL rear end someone faster than you can believe possible.

Pic is from a 1993 Right hand drive Diablo 5.7 V12 - well tuned and running race gas at about 4500 ft asl with about 8km of run up - absolutely flat out.

About 15 cars ran - no problems at all (unless 50l/100km consumption is a problem) - nothing broke - no 12$ an hour mechanics for these cars...

I think Robyn is right - it's definately overreading - about 10 - 15 percent at least I think - fastest car on the day hit 308km/h on a GPS speed tracking device - 6l Diablo VTR, maybe 1km/h faster than the Murcielago. I think true speed for my car was about 280 - 290 kph - not much more than autobahn speeds on a good day, but feels a whole lot quicker.

Since been replaced by an '83 Countach 5000S - very cool, and my dream car as a kid, but realistically, an absolute pig on a track and worse in the wet (swaps ends for nothing) - currently being restored (2.5 years so far and counting).

I do keep cash (emergency cash - about 15USD equivalent) with my drivers liscence (in a plastic sleeve) and twice it has beeen removed by a cop (in a friendly way) during stops (liscence inspections) - both times for some ostensible irregularity/unroadworthyness (not likely - I am pretty **** about maintenance). Bribing cops is illegal, but is very widespread in the whole of africa, and traffic cops are generally badly trained, paid worse, and generally not up to much. That said - at least we have some and they do do some good, although performing a citizens arrest on one asking for a bribe is going to be tricky - very tricky.

Now if they could just do something about the minibus taxi's road manners I would be a happy man.

About Lolly - what was not mentioned is that he got stopped TWICE that day - same road - once each way - how many fines do you see?

And knowing Lolly - I am 100% sure he said exactly that "Sorry Okes" and meant it. For a laugh - Google "Lolly Jackson" (Okes is prounounced (Oaks" - short for Blokes)

Now that you have all the facts and are off the soap box, the apology was nice...

First it assumes you have some ability to control that vehicle, all things running smoothly, at 200mph and i would bet that only the most experienced track drivers have solid experience in that area. then, you're assuming your car might not suffer a failure at 200mph, and while i'm sure its built wonderfully, all it takes is that 2dollar lugnut getting mistorqued by the $12.00/hour mechanic who was rushing home because $1.00 beers only are available till 7pm.

and you're also assuming the roads are capable of those speeds. i know of few roads in the northeast US where you can haul like that without some crack in the road ripping your wheel to pieces....

mainly, while i do care that anyone would be careless with their own life like that....i think its beyond reckless that you conceivable risk the lives of others, innocent drivers, moms, daugheters, sons....with your showboating, because thats all that it is.

more disgusting is the guy trying to take photos of his own reckless behaviour. when you wreck, and you take out some poor innocent person, that photo will basically ensure you do about 20 years in prison for aggravated manslaughter.

im not a prude, and like many of us, we take liberties on the road, but 200mph? photographing yourself? in a 'Club ride". not the kind of club i want to be part of.

hit the track i think the track guys would say. atleast there its an assumed risk in a controlled environment.

just some food for thought.

John,
He slapped the cuffs on you for only 105 mph. Prolly thought you were a thug with a Porsche Owners Club plate. CHP's are well trained and he gave you a semi break as you can wipe it out with traffic school. Over 100 mph is a two pointer and no traffic school for you. You passed the attitude test. Unfortunetly, I didn't.

No sense making the insurance companies rich with some points, go to traffic school and get rehabed like Lindsey Lohan.

Now if it was for over a hundred, I'd help you with the pleadings. Your future cell mate BIG JIMMY.

Guys, it has already been said "reckless driving" and that is the Officer's call. That is a "misdemeanor" and a go to jail or go to the Judge offense, and the individual can legally be cuffed. Once the operator of the car is going to jail the officer can not leave the car at the side of the road. The car must be impounded for safe keeping. The inventory of the car at the time of arrest is to establish the contents of the vehicle and if the driver had been transported to jail the driver would have signed that the items found in the car were there and nothing else. If a driver does not think he was driving reckless, when he goes before the Judge he says "not guilty", and fights it in court. The best way to keep this kind of thing from taking place is to save high speed driving for the track. I am not an Attorney but am a retired Officer and what the above Officer did is the same way I did it in Texas

Funny, he asked me if I'd like to share a cell with this attorney in Orange County who likes to race around the highways on Sunday mornings in his black TT.
He was mumbling under his breath that old Johnny Cash tune "I hear the train a coming"....

John,
The cable TV's ok here in the OC slammer. Internet is dial up so it tough to get the good ****. I contributed to the sherriffs last election campaign, so I get the good deltails like washing the sheriffs car. ( they call it a unit)

Since speeding in Newport Beach is a capital offense there's a lot of porsche guys here. We've got to be careful though cause, some Vette drivers get arrested for child molestation and claim there porsche drivers. We know who there are cause they can't pronounce Porscha, they say Porsh.

If you want to fight the ticket and get the cop on the stand I can help, as I've got a lot of experience. The fact that he used the cuffs for intimidation is a good lesson I'll remember. I'm sure you glad that your name wasn't Roddney King. The fact that you were calm enough to pass the attidtue test in spite of the intimidation, is a credit to you. I'll have to remember that if I ever get out.
