Mr. Bill:
I very low cost option can be found at Pep Boys of all places. I have red alumimum cylinders that have locking pin and are lightweight and have flat bottom (blacktop friendly). $30.00+/- buys a pair. I will be a Sebring all of July if you want to check them out, BTW did I mention I have a great wife

What is inherently unsafe about the rachet style? Sounds like a freak failure that could happen no matter what style of jack stand you are using.

IIRC, there was recently a group buy, organized by Steve at Ultimate Garage adn Marc Shaw (super moderator) for some VERY well built jackstands.

After seeing what my then teenage boys were doing putting their cars up onto jack stands, it wasn't hard to convince my wife that we needed to build a proper garage and put in a twin post lift. Just like I wouldn't crawl under a car up on a floor jack, when I have to use jack stands, I try to have the floor jack or somthing else there as a backup.

There's a pic of the failed stand- it looked like the tang wasn't square and the load was uneven on the ratchet. Poor casting of the part?

The stands I have are heavy, cast items that will be here with the roaches. I cannot see how they could fail without tipping over.

Tip #2- keep a phone close. In the thread, someone brought up keeping a cell phone in pocket. One of my college profs was pinned under his Vette. He thought he'd have to wait until the mail ran on Monday... it was Saturday night. He wiggled loose after a few hours.

I bought some large ratchet stands at one of those traveling tool sales. They were junk, and several things on them have broken, mostly the steel piece that should keep the ratchet from slipping.

These traveling tool sales make Harbour Freight tools look like Facom. Stick with Sears of some name brand stuff. Of course even those could fail, I guess.

So, I'm still not sure if it was a freak accident or not...
but I'll sure be taking a good look at that jack gear angle... might even try drilling the ones I have...

These are aluminum, but the base looks small to me...

I think I like these, but might be too tall.

Yikes! I've used those cheap ones on my Suburban front end. But not without keeping some pressure on the jack as well as a backup when I get underneat. I have to admit I was actually surprised they didn't immediately buckle. It might be w/ too light a load (914), the release trigger is too easy???
