Best Instructor Thread
Well, we had the worst instructor thread, which was actually very educational for many of us. It helps to know how we can improve to make our students' track day experience the best it can be. It was recommended to start a positive thread, so here I am again, posting about it.
My favorite instructor, back in 2000, is someone I've tried to emulate as an instructor myself. He was calm, funny, very informative, used a lot of hand signals, and overall a very polite guy. Even when I messed up a turn over and over again, he kept cool and showed real patience for me as a novice driver who thought she knew everything. I owe my career as an instructor, driver, and racer to his teachings. And I'm not afraid to tell you who he is -- Danny McKeever of McKeever Racing School (www.raceschool.com). I highly recommend him!
How about you all? Tell us about your favorite instructor(s). Or, what would you think would be the perfect instructor? What can we do to make your track experience awesome?

I want no part of any club that would admit me.
Or, as you reminded me via PM, I would never join any club that would have me as a very large member.

My first instructor was my best. I had known him for years and ran against him in autocrosses, but he got to the track about 5 or 6 years before I did. He too drove 914s and so he knew exactly what they were like. Had lots of patience with me and also lots of nerve as I probably was one of the more "eager" students. He was also a very consistent driver, with lots of presence of mind. I think that is what impressed me the most.

Well, I guess we have to get serious. I have been blessed with several great instructors, and still am, since I try to take other instructors in my right seat when I instruct. One of my first is still a friend to this day. Beyond the basic mechanical skills he taught, he also taught a lot of the motor and mental skills as well. A lot of it went over my head until I had advanced quite a bit, but I find myself remembering more & more of it even today!

Fortunately for me, of the 5 instructors I've had, none of them would be even close to being considered for the Bad instructor thread. All knew what they were doing and were good instructors. However, the last 2 I had at TWS were most excellent and both really helped me to make progress. They were Jacy Legault and Paul Norwood. Great guys, patient and knowledgable.

Steve
