"From 2010, all the LMP1 cars will be closed-tops featuring bodywork having a closer resemblance to the manufacturers road cars."

Does this mean we'll see Tommy Kendall running a TransAm car at LeMans?

Well its a mixed bag.

For the long term health of motorsport, having the LMP1s look like something we see on the street is a great idea.

Reducing the cost of GT2 cars by cutting back on the electronics is short sighted. This most amateur of all the classes is dependent upon the enthusiasms of those bankrolling the teams. I can tell you that the guy who has just trousered up half a million euros to let you run a campaign gets a lot of satisfaction from being able to monitor the onboard telemetry in real time. Especially if you deliver it to a mobile handset that he can wave it under the noses of his buddies and their families in the hospitality box.
If you want to cut the cost of GT2, then:
1. Make the manufacturers produce more buy-n-go race cars, this will reduce the cost of carbon fibre/kevlar bits
2. Allow more flexibility with gearboxes, this will bring the cost down
3. Modify the rules to enforce better damage protection front and rear, we still see radiators, suspension members and gearboxes damaged in quite minor shunts and spins.
4. Increase the list of parts which cannot be changed. For example, there is quite a cost associated with carry spare front radiators for GT3s along with the pressurisation systems to make quick changes possible.
5. Encourage manufacturers to adopt a more unitary approach to sub components - it 30 times longer to change the rear suspension on a GT3 than it does on a R10.

The ACO are a bunch of grocers and doctors, fishmongers and small manufacturers who just happen to be running one of the greatest races in the world. They aren't in the business of motorsports, although everybody has to take notice of what they say. They twitch like hell if somebody suggests they don't know what they are talking about.

At this point all the race teams will be bringing out their own 'honourary Frenchman' to quietly lobby the ACO.

sounds like they would have to pick up some manufacturer support and rebadge their chassis or sell cars to LMP2

Lola is/was tied to MG, so would it be worth bothering with a MGTF LeMans?
Should be some interesting stuff once it's sorted.

I know, I think it is a stupid rule to have manufacturer likeness. I do like the idea of having LMP1 be closed cockpit and LMP2 open, although the open cockpit cars allow for much better in car camera TV viewing than closed cars.
