I don't have any direct examples, but I can tell you that the race and wheel shops I consulted with while picking wheels and tires all said the same sorts of things. That you can have PSM and ABS issues if the "balance" wasn't right. Don't go too wide up front (thus 8.5" instead of 9" or greater) and try to be as close to oem wheel diameters (I was told the 25.3" PSC should not cause problems, but the 26.3" RA1 was probably "safer" due to diameter). All of this input was in reference to the 997 platform, which has different PSM logic than even the 996. So, perhaps a 996 has more flexibility built into it than the 997 - I really don't know.

I would like...I am thinking about...getting a set of low cost wheels and some good tires just for my DE's and AutoX so that I do not wear out my everyday street tires. I am thinking I might be able to find a set of OEM (lobster forks) pretty cheap. Or should I go with a set of 18" non S OEM wheels?
My car is a 2006 997S with Carrera Sport (see my avitar) wheels and PS2's...305's for the rear. I like the extra grip back there and would like to stay with the same widths all around.
Suggestions?

Choices are limited with OEM 19" wheels. Pretty much stuck with PSCs for about $1750 a set and note they are not "regular" PSCs - they are redesigned/formulated for Porsche GT3, meaning larger rain channels and different compound for cold/wet - so they are not as grippy as regular PSCs.
I've seen some people use oem 18s from the 997 in 18x8 front and 18x10 rear running a variety of R-comps, including "regular" PSCs in 235/295. It's a stretch, but the rim width is within Michelin's specifications.
