Default Stock 997 GT3 lap times at CA tracks??

Over the weekend a brand new 997 GT3 attended the concours I was at....it was one week old with only 450miles on it! I talked with the owner quite a bit and he said it was much faster than his 996 GT3 that ran 2:00 flat at thunderhill (with turn 5).....he thinks it will run high 1:50's no problem.....

Interestingly he said his 996 GT3 ran 2:00 and his GT2 ran 2:05....he said he just couldn't put the power down in the GT2 and was spinning the tires too much & it didn't handle as well as the GT3.....

So heres my ???...what kind of lap times would a new 997 GT3 & GT3 RS run at some local (norcal is all I really know) tracks like thunderhill, infinieon & laguna?

I read in a car magazine that a new stock C6 Z06 runs 1:47's on stock tires (crap run flats) at laguna..... Makes me wonder how a GT3 compares along with the Viper GTS coupe....both the vette & viper have far more power..but don't seem to run much faster times?

Any answer would be purely speculation at this point. As time goes on and drivers figure out how to setup the car, that's when we will see the real impact this car will have.

I was 1/100 off a 997 GT3 at Fontana. I don't think I'm that fast. Don't know the driver though.

hum... i think i know pretty much all the bay area 996gt3 owners who can clear 2:00 mark at TH.

150 at TH in 997gt3, you got to be very very top club racer or semi pro. i am talking about a stock street 997gt3 here.

i know and have seen 2:00 flat, actually a tick below, on a stock but hoosier'd 996gt3. based on this driver's skill (a friend but not on RL), i know that the car can hit 158 on hoosiers, all else being stock, but i am talking about some of th fastest shoes in the local norcal track.

i'll chk with a few fast GT3 drivers to see their times.

oops, sorry.... i read the original post again.
it said HIGH 150's. yes i would say that's possible.
i was thinking of 1:50:XX... THAT would be hard if not impossible.

Heres the link to motortrend.....1:39.5 for the GT3 and 1:40.9 for the ZO6...but thats with crappy run flat tires too....I'm sure with Sport Cups it could match or possibly beat the GT3.....but the test driver did say the Z06 was hard to drive and the GT3 was awesome & he felt he only was pushing it 85% too! Thats pretty damm good for a bone stock street car...i wonder how much faster the Gt3 RS is?

Mooty
I do think 1:50 would be nearly impossible unless they had huge HP & grip.....I want to say a GT3 (RS or RSR) that ran in 25 hours on Thunderhill ran a 1:53 or somewhere close to that?

I saw the video of the 1972 911 with 993 motor that ran 2:01....that guy was MOVING....I can't imagine a 1:53......the viper I rode in was a 2:09 with a very conservative driver taking it easy!

Kibort runs 2:01.7 in traffic at thunderhill with bypass in his stockish 928....typically Mark Anderson stroker racecar is around 10 seconds faster on most tracks....so that puts him around low 1:50's.....or right at GT3 RSR times...which sounds about right?

I'm happy lapping in the 2:30's at thunderhill in my bone stock 20 year old 928!! Its just so much fun!

Thanks.

But that's a 964 motor, and it's a 964 motor that isn't in any way built up -- it's never even been opened. And I was running a size down on tires, front and rear, and they were Toyos, not Hoosiers -- so I think there's still more there.

I think with a little work I could get very close to a two flat with the cyclone, and I'm at 247 hp and almost 2500 pounds. On good tires, a 997 GT3 should be quicker than that. But you'd need a decent driver and some suspension setting tuning to get it very far into the fifties.

The video is linked down below in my signature. My apologies again for the audio being out.

Jack
Toyo RA1's are a very good tire.......Kibort likes them better than Hoosiers?? Mostly since they are free from the dumpster after the World Speed Challange race! :>)

I thought your motor was hotter than that? Makes the times even more impressive!

right on. i think GT3 well driven can be in HIGH 150's. but 1:50:xx is nearly impossible.

one of the faster drivers i spoke with had the following input. i asked, "how fast can you drive a fresh hoosier'd, race pads, but all else stock (safety eqipment doesn't count as mods) 996gt3 at
TH with cyclone
SP
LS
no traffic, and you dont have to worry about going off."

the response:

Sub 2:00 at TH, probably 1:57-58
Sub 1:40 at SP
Laguna I am not sure, 1:36-38?

Thanks. I'll agree that free is better, pretty much always. But Hoosiers are faster than Toyos. (I just can't drive up from Los Angeles on Hoosiers.)

Kibort taught me to run that inside line into turn 2. It doesn't work for everybody, but it got me maybe half a second at that track.

jack, by inside line for T2, you mean like spec miata where you basically glue yourself to the inside from entry to just before exit? if so, do you have to counter steer like mad in order to keep up the speed?

i can't do it in 997's but for the lighter cars, i can. just want to make sure i am doing it right.
