they did ok. It rained our first session and was 60 degrees and cloudy for the balance - hardly ideal conditions for tire testing. I took temps during one session and I only got them up to 110 degrees which isn't hot. I was sliding the car pretty good too. I also had to adjust out some understeer and didn't have a loose=fast set up. I guess what I'm trying to say is that they weren't as fast as I expected them to be but that may not be the tire's fault. I went into the day with each tire at 14 heat cycles.

Any more feedback from anyone else?

I ran them at the NASA Nationals at Mid-Ohio on my 944 Cup...I had always used Hoosier R6 on this car and decided to try the R1. I turned the fastest (for this car) lap ever using these tires,1:43.8...Had multiple 1:44ish laps during the race...They stayed consistent and did not go away in the 40 minute race...I will be using them from now on. I am eager to try a set on the 964 cup as soon as I burn up the last of my Hoosiers....Ran them for a practice session the day before and then let them sit for 36 hours to heat cycle...Try 'em, I think you'll like 'em!

But if the R888's don't pan out, I would be curious to see if the R-1's are a viable choice for me, so I too, am very interested to see if anyone has had some real-world experience with this new rubber...

Toyo, has no 16' tire selection , well one size only , so you would have to have 17 or 18's to have a good selection ......

I was helping a friend (fast driver in a fast 993) dial a set of R1's in a couple of weeks ago, and he was definitely faster on these vs the Hoosiers -- small track at Pocono they were maybe worth .5 seconds or so. 110 is way too cold, of course, we were looking more like 150.

They need a better tire sizes though, 335/30 is way too tall for me, so I'd have to run 285 rear. Then the fronts are either 225 or 265. They have a 245 but it's the wrong profile, it's a 40.

I'm going to bump this to keep it at the top as I'm curious to find out informaiton on performance near the end of the tire's life...AND how much life everyone is getting out of these.

I agree. The 225/40-18 is too tall. I run a 245/35-18 Hoosier.

Is it true, though, that the R1's run a bit wide for a given size?

The MPSC runs at 25.2 inches and the R1 in 245/40 and 275/35 run at 25.4
Not too much of a difference I think, plus for heavy 911's like ours the load rating in these sizes are better than the 285/30 which runs at 25 inches.

I'll be trying out the new R1's at Summit this weekend. I have a back up set of Hoosiers with 3 cycles, just in case I'm running the 225/40 and 275/40 18's. They seem to fit fine. Look alot beefier than the Hoosiers because they're more square where the sidewall meets the tread. Would've like to have used the 245/40's, but if with my alignment, they were too big. Tim Costa, who is running in E, will be trying them as well.

I ran them at VIR for the first time a few weeks ago and I got the same time as the R6s to the hundredth of a second according to my DL-1. Comparisons of tires aside, I thought it was pretty wild that I would go back to a track 4 mos. later and get the EXACT same time w/ or w/o different tires.

Anyway, the BFGs “felt” like they had more stick than the R6s and I *think they are slightly faster. The reason I say that is when I was at VIR in April the temps were in the mid/high-60’s and a few weeks ago we were in the low/mid 80’s. I could definatly feel a hp difference. I wish I could get back to VIR in cooler weather this year to find out, but in cooler weather, I think the R1s will be ½ to 1 second faster than the R6s. I will be at Summit in November, so hopefully a ½ to 1 second then.

As far as wear, after 8 HCs they do show quite a bit more wear than the R6s did. I’m not concerned at this point though as I had plenty of rubber on the last 2 sets of R6s before the HC’d out. I got about 15 good HCs out of the R6s before they were burned out, and am hoping the R1s will give me 20 before they HC out and hopefully have some tread left for that.

I found they run bigger in the same sizes. I ran 245/40/17 Hooisers on my 7” Cup IIs, and there wasn’t much bulge, although I realize, it is not ideal. The R6s are different though and they are sticking out a lot. I would go down a size next time, but they seem to be working fine, not sure yet. For the rear, I run 275/40/17s and ……I got black flagged for tire rub w/ the R1s. The rub was on the secondary muffler and trailing arm, so I put in a 3mm spacer and still had too much rub so I went to a 6 mm spacer and that worked out fine…..with no apparent rubbing on the fender.

I will be buying another set if I don’t go back to Toyos to save some coin (see avatar).

Bottom line is that I got the same times as the Hoosiers, but with slightly worse conditions. In addition to the temp being higher, most were complaining about the grip at VIR that weekend.

What target hot pressures are people shooting for with the R1's?

33-34 on my SC. At 35-36 the centers were 5-10 degrees hotter than the shoulders.

Grassroots Motorsports did a tire comparison in a recent issue... They found the BFG R1 to easily trump the late Hoosier Road racing tire.

The only reason why I was suspect of this test was that it was on a short course and they didn't do that many laps on each run...

cheers,
Patrick

Are you sure we are talking about the same test? I am going to check the article tonight as I was pretty sure it was the R6...

cheers,
