That is all true, but in my experience a lap or two on track clears the tires so would that not be the easiest thing? I can understand pulling rubber from the inside of the wheel.

Is the car street-able? If so, a couple of miles should take care of it.

Thanks guys, I should have presented my problem more clearly. I just bought a set of SSR GT-S light-weight wheels that came with a set of Yoko Advan AO48 tires. The tires look to be in good shape but 2 have this sizeable tar/asphalt (whatever) build-up. It's a strip running around the tire 2-3inches wide (variable size). I am going to get the wheels balanced and use them on the track only.

I would not balance the tire with all that crap on it. If the tire came already mounted to the wheel I'd just drive it. All that crap should come off pretty quckly and then it should be fine. You could make the balance worse if you rebalance with crap on there and then it comes off at 2-3 laps on the track.

If you have tire service at the track you can always run a session and it the tire vibrates too much have them balance at the track.

Take it to a race shop that deals with tires. Most racing tire shops have the ability to shave tires. Just ask them to clean up the tire before they balance it. A good shop would do it without you even asking in the first place.

Thanks guys, I think I will either run them on the track, or get them cleaned up first and then high speed balanced.

I get my tires shaved (RA-1) and my guy won't shave tires that have been run. It is very easy to damage the cutting blades from imbedded rocks and such. I think this is par for course on shaving.

Yep a little on-track warm-up with some side-to-side swerving should take care of the problem. In the future try and stay on the clean parts of the track and paddock on cool-down.

PS unless you're really sure about the tires pedigrees I'd put fresh rubber on and get 'em balanced.

I like to peel off the 2 or 3 biggest rubber pieces, put them in a ziploc baggie, and mail back to Hoosier with a big label saying:
"USE FOR BREEDING PURPOSES."

Well I'm glad I could be of no help to you . But it was an honest question, what does it matter? Are you the type of person that details their car inbetween sessions? And yes, I have seen people do that.

You need clean tires for suspension setup. One big blob of track rubber in the wrong spot and your camber reading is off by 1/2 degree...
