Default Sparco vs Stand 21

Trying to decide what company to get a suit from I've narrowed it down to Sparco X-light or Tech light, then I compared Stand 21, and looked at all three suits but couldn't find the weights of the suits. Has anyone used or looked at both, I've seen plenty of Sparco around the track but not many Stand 21 suits. Which one is the lightest, or shouldn't I worry about that? Also I noticed that they have a offical Porsche suit, is anyone going to laugh at me if I get that or should I opt for the custom designs that they have. I'd like to avoid the "Hey its the tubby brother of Patrick Long" jokes at the track - Im 6 4ft and like pizza a bit too much... sparco 66 is a clue

I have the Sparco X-light and it is VERY comfortable and lightweight- did not try the Stand 21 but I too have seen a fair number of the Sparco suits at various tracks...
It's amazing the suit is triple layer considering how it feels. I wear a coolsuit shirt under it at times and when it's HOT (Topeka in July) it's almost heaven...

Stand21 is as good as it gets. It can get pricey if you get to wild with the customization, like I did.

How light is the Stand 21, I though about getting the ST021. Stand 21 can make a custom suit in three week vs Sparco which will take 5-6 weeks.

just weighed my custom Stand 21, 3 layer, ST 3000 material suit for you....3.75 pounds with the hanger and dry cleaning plastic on it...the best thing about this suit is you can feel it cooling/evaporating while you are wearing it......very much worth it for the breathable material

Thanks for doing that, I thought the ST3000 was a 2 layer suit, if I wear two layers suit should I wear nomex underneath? Also any thoughts on getting a custom design vs the porsche factory look?

At least for SCCA you need a 3 layer suit to NOT have to wear Nomex underwear, at least to be legal...the X-light is 3 layer.

I have both the Sparco Tech One (off the rack) and a brand new custom Stand 21 ST021.

They are both nice suits but the Stand 21 has some nice features like different collar configurations and extra velcro on the waist straps.

But that being said be very careful in measuring your suit if you are getting a custom Stand 21. They are made in France and fit different than the Sparco. I took all my measurements and the fit in the shoulders is a tad tight. If possible get the Stand 21 guys to measure you.

The other difference is the Stand 21 was $2100 and the Sparcos are about $1200-1300.

Hope that helps.

Phil,

I wear a 3-layer sparco suit AND nomex undies. I also wear a nomex balacava with my nomex lined Bell helmet. All of these layers do become rather uncomfortable as the ambient temps climb - but, the discomfort is temporary. Weighed against the pain and permenant disfigurement of 3rd & 4th degree burns, it's a no brainer.

Good info, I guess I should say away from 2 layer suits then. It's something you never think is going to happen but I remember seeing my friend disfigured face with serious burns after the IRA blew up his vehicle, not the same thing but reminds me of what kind of damage fire can do. Are you using a cool suit? I have one but haven't used it yet.
