Attn Texas DE'ers: change in insurance law impacts DE and track day coverage
Well, looks like Texas is joing the rest of the country in the DE insurance delimma. I just got a notification yesterday of policy changes that severely restrict the coverage of my car. The letter opens with the following statement: "Previously the state required all insurance companies to use the same policy that was developed by the Texas Bureau. The law changed and companies may now use their own policies as long as they are approved by the Texas Insurance Department." In the new exclusions, it states: "We also exclude coverage when a vehicle is operated on a racing surface, participating in high performance driving or racing instruction or when preparing for, practicing for, used in, or competing in any prearranged or organized race activity or speed, performance, stunt or demolition contest." I would say that includes DE's.
Has anyone else in Texas received a similar notice of change to your policy? I'm guessing that it will coincide with your renewal dates. I don't know if all insurance companies operating in Texas will adopt this, or if they will all do so right away. But I suspect that none of the insurance companies will miss the opportunity to limit their payout liability where they have the freedom to.
This may be the end of DE'ing for me since I don't have deep enough pockets to walk away from my RSA if it is totalled. And the DE insurance I've checked into is horrendously expensive with $10K deductibles. I'm really unsure about where to go from here with the whole track experience and DE's. And just when I was getting started too...
As a side note, it also says that a vehicle isn't covered if being used to deliver pizzas or newspapers. Guess I'll have to find a new career...

Greg, take a look at the recent threads here about DE insurance. I just signed up with Snellings Walters with $35,000 in coverage for about $1,000 a year with a $2,000 deductible (unlimited number of DE days).

I need to check my policy, but my insurance babe has to know what I'm up to... salvage title, only driven one weekend a month? I bought my 944 for the purpose that it is 'disposable'.

Doesn't sound like much of a change from my current USAA policy. I don't have it handy, but it specifically excluded incidents that occur on any closed circuit intended for the purpose of racing regardless of what I was doing there. Since that's where DEs are held, they're excluded. There was some additional language, but that's the jist of it.

Sean, is your coverage only property damage? How does the pay out work, i.e. do they decide whether to pay 35k or something....less depending on how little they can get away with? The price is definately right.

You're probably not going to be used to soo much power, so I want you to prepare ahead time in your suburban. I mean you can't just go out there and drive it like it's an M3.
