Default BMW F1 car (2007) to run at the Nordschleife

Wanna take bets on the lap time (yeah, no goal to set records my ***)?

Formula 1 action will return to Nurburgring’s fabled Nordschleife (“Northern Loop” in German) after more than three decades, courtesy of BMW Sauber.

Racer Nick Heidfeld will steer a BMW Sauber F1.07 on April 28 as part of the German’s marque annual motorsport extravaganza at the 22-kilometer (nearly 14 miles) track, which hasn’t been used for F1 racing since 1976, when Niki Lauda suffered a fiery, near-fatal crash during the German Grand Prix. F1 has since returned to the venue, but utilizing the shorter, much safer "Sudschleife", or Sourthern Loop, which has hosted the European Grand Prix since 1995.

"This day is our way of saying thank-you to the fans for their support," BMW motorsport boss Mario Theissen said. "BMW is a longstanding partner of the Nurburgring.

"This is a kind of second home for us, as well as the scene of victories in all disciplines of racing. The Formula 1 car's laps of the Nordschleife will be the highlight of a day devoted to BMW Motorsport.

"Nick's demonstration will not be about setting records, but a tribute to a unique race track - one which is inextricably linked to the heritage of BMW Motorsport."

I'm curious to see if they do try for a record, given Heidfeld's (presumed) lack of experience running on the entire circuit and the question of car setup/tire choice.

Heidfeld knows the circuit very well - abet with street cars, as he goes there quite regularly. In fact the one day I ran there back in 2002 he was there running his Porsche.

Of course the perspective is probably (!!) quite a bit different sitting 2 feet lower in an F1 car!

Isn't the track kinda bumpy for a modern F1 car? I would think he'd high side coming out of Carousel.

My thoughts exactly. I guess that's what the "...it's not about setting records..." bit is all about.

Ride height and spring rates are adjustable , downforce would be set back, it would be impossible for him to beat the prototype record ..

I've got the track memorized thanks to playstation's GT4 :-). I must have some 500 laps around there by now. My best time 6:06 in an Audi R8. So technically I beat Stefan Bellof's time in a 962/956. OK OK I'll go back to my little cyber world now..........

A 2002 Porsche C4S that I had picked up at the factory 10 days previously.

Accordingly my laps (I did 5) were moderate if not sedate. Still had a great time and it is a memory I cherish!
