Check your trailer tires
Guys:
I was on the way to my mechanic's at lunch today to drop off my 930 when one of my tires on my trailer shredded.
I'm not exactly sure why, and generally I keep a good eye on my tires, but this one shredded big time.
Just a friendly reminder - especially for all of you getting ready to head south for the VIR event this weekend.

Trailer tires have a unique designation. Unlike passenger tires of the same size, which are generally precluded with a "P" designation preceeding the size (P215/75R15), proper trailer tires are preceeded with an "ST", which designates Special Trailer, usually consisting with a heavier sidewall (abraison protection), higher load rating(carrying capacity) and anti-ozone capabilities (preventing cracks in the sidewall as the tires age - usually trailer tires age before they wear-out). As a good rule of thumb, replace trailer tires when they get to be five years old (reading the DOT number on the sidewall - the last three didgets indicate the week and year of manufacturer - ie 205 would be the 20th week of 1995 - tires produced in 2000 now carry the last four didgets, but works the same way - 0200 would be the 2nd week of 2000) and do so with proper trailer tires. Goodyear makes a good one called the Marathon ST in all of the common sizes and load ratings for typical tag trailers.

Nice info on the trailer tire life. Also grease your hubs. I know of more failures from hub failure than tire delamination. There are too many ways to hurt our race cars. A trailer shouldn't be one. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

Brownd911:
The tires on my trailer were new in early 2000, and they are the Goodyear Marathon ST's.
I think I must have ran over something. I'll send a pic of the tire later today.

years ago I blew a trailer tire coming back from Sebring, it shredded, ripped off the alumunim wheel fender which in turn ripped off my attached awning which messed up the roof. All from a blown tire....
