Important: The noise does not have to be perceived as loud for damage to occur. In fact, check out this link (http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/ruler.asp) and read the chart below. It might surprise you. I love the hear the engine as much as the next guy, but I just can't bear to lose my hearing at age 28:
110 Decibels
Regular exposure of more than 1 minute risks permanent hearing loss.
100 Decibels
No more than 15 minutes unprotected exposure recommended.
85 Decibels
Prolonged exposure to any noise above 85 decibels can cause gradual hearing loss

M1's make the same glorious noise in race spec. I carry ear plugs with me to most race events I spectate. I *hate* putting them in at F1 races, but after a few laps you have to.
