Default 944 oil pan baffle kit

Hi All;

I'm going to modify my pan. Does anyone have suggestions for the best kit to buy. My car is a 944S2. I have seen Lindsey Racings version but I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks...

I'd be interested in opinions also as this is something on my to do list...

I've seen a "scraper" for sale as well. Don't know if it does the same thing or not...

Don,

Any particular reason for doing this? I think that the S2 oiling is not a problem and I do not see the original pan as a potential weak point. However, if you have made up your mind to do it, talking to Lindsey is a good option.

Hi Nader;

The pan on my crashed white car was done. Steinel's recommends the updated 944 kit (part number 944 107 389 03). A few others who know 944 engines quite well think its a good idea. Lindsey and Milledge being two notable names. I really don't know how necessary it is. I do know its a very large pain in the *** to do, because you have to R&R the pan. Not a trivial job. I'm contemplating now, as I have a leak, but it would be interesting to hear how many S2, Turbo, and 968 racers have this done.

Don,

Thats a factory superceeded part # for the oil pan baffle, not some aftermarket upgrade kit. May want to check your engine code with PET, you likely already have the latest oil pan baffle installed in your S2 engine.

Its a little hard to tell when the factory swapped over from the -01, to the -02, to the -03. But somewhere around model year '88-89.

Hi Jim;

Thanks. I've never checked PET for a code. Can you explain how to cross reference my engine code with PET to see if I have the latest baffle?

Looking at PET, transition between -01 and -02 part numbers took place mid-model year '87 and was used through MY '88. Looks like all M41 and M52 engines (S2 and Turbo S) use the latest -03 pan baffles starting in MY '89.

There are lots of threads with pics on this topic.

Definately Do It, change the Oil Pickup as well. The costs are minimal, and worth the effort.

As stated above Lyndsey has what you need, Those guys are and awesome source of anything 944 Performance Related.

General consensus among the 944 track crowd is that the factory updated oil pan baffle is recommended (but your S2 should already have the updated part).

Reinforcing the oil pickup tube welds is also somewhat common (since the factory welds and tab are pretty weak - high mileage engines and ones that have been run w/o balance shafts have been known to crack the welds and bracket).

Other add-on aftermarket tricks to fix premature rod bearing failures: the Lindsey "flapper" kit for the oil pan, cross or perp drilling the crank, etc, will not likely get as much widespread consensus on their effectiveness. Some swear by one or more of these various updates, others do not....(?).

Hi Don,

Again, I am usually only half right about technical stuff, but I believe that -03 was the factory's latest fix for any oiling isues of the earlier 44s. Talk to Lindsey, I think their product is a deeper pan to improve oil pick up for earlier cars. S2 pan has a different design than the early oil pans.

Don,

Have had mine in since I did the rod bearings a year or so ago (one race season) and haven't spun one yet... so it must work...

Seriously, there is so much noise on the no. 2 bearing oiling "issue" that it's near impossible to know for sure what the cause/s is/are and how to "fix" it/them. However, the Lindsey baffle (and skirt for the pickup) seem to be cheap insurance, especially if you've already got the pan off.
