Fire extingushier mount
I am planning on installing a fire extinguisher mount in my 996 for DE Events. I have noticed some mount them on the passenger side and some on the drivers side. Anyone that has done this----what side and what is the reasoning for the side you chose?
thanks in advance

I can't speak to a 996 specifically, however, when I mounted mine in front of my 911 seat, I chose the passenger seat. The drivers feet are moving quite a bit when on the track, and you don't need the distraction of a fire extinguisher. The passenger is only along for the ride, and can comfortably sit with their legs extended over the extinguisher. It worked quite well for me.

It doesn't matter where you mount it, as long as it is within your reach while you are belted in (with 5 or 6 pt. harnesses) AND as long as its secure with metal to metal mounting.
Usually somewhere behind the passenger seat is the best.

I'm sure Chris meant in "front" of the passenger seat, not "behind" it.
Brey Krause makes a powder-coated metal mounting bracket for 996's that uses the front two seat bracket bolts to fasten it to the floor under the seat rails. It has a little metal tray that the fire extinguisher mounts to and is held solidly. It makes it pretty easy to remove the extinguisher if you don't want it there for street use (although it's not a bad idea, we generally have at least 1 car a day burn up on the Beltway).

Mine is on the rear diagonal going from behind the top of my seat to the passenger side seat bottom. When I'm not strapped in, I can hardly move around to access it. I'm thinking of moving it to a more accessible place like in front of one of the seats or between them in case my world turns upside down one day on the track and I really need it.

Stable energies also makes a FE mounting bracket that may not be a fancy powder coated unit, but it costs about 1/2 the price of the BK FE bracket.

PS: regarding mounting the bracket: while you don't need to take out your seats to install these things, it will take you 3-4 hours LONGER if you leave your seat in! (Don't ask! <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" /> )

I tried the usual places like the front passenger using BK mounts, etc...I found these all unsatisfactory to a degree. The psnger mount was prone to being kicked-about as a passnenger or DE instructor came on board. Plus, I wasn't too sure I could access it when belted in with 5 points.
I now have the FE mounted on the right-side vertical of the roll bar hoop down low...so I can reach behind the psnger seat and flip the catch that holds the FE in-place. Also, very sealthy in normal street mode...mostly hidden by the street belt.
