Open Exhaust & Club Racing Cars
Guys,
Need some opinions....
Assume there are no track mandated noise restrictions should club level racing race be allowed open exhausts?
Have any of you had a problem with cars running with open exhausts exiting out the car?
Thanks Guys

I have heard some god awful loud cars at race events, usually the cup cars. To run open or not depends on the class your car is running. I know you have to run a muffler in stock classes. In GT you can run with straight pipes and megaphones. Noise limitations are on a track by track basis.

Actually,it's my understanding that stock cars do not need a muffler. From the 2002 club racing rulebook, page 10, Section 1 (Stock class A-K), letter E. " Exhaust system is free providing the engine meets any local noise limit requirements."

Running a race car with a muffler just isn't right.......it has to be loud !
Sloth is correct, usually the track dictates the noise level restriction, normally the tracks with residential areas in close proximity.

The Cupcars, at least the GTC2 cars, have no mufflers, but have cats.. they have impounded all of them at a couple races I've been in to check for the cats. I think the GT3RS's are the ones that you're thinking are loud, and they are!

I guess I should clarify...
I too understand that the PCA rules allow this, but does anyone feel that open exhauts are too loud for non-pro club level of racing. Are they too loud and bother the other drivers??? Is 944 na with straight pipe too loud??
Thanks for your input guys.. Much appreciated

Not something I would even worry about... unless the track had noise limits.
on edit...
A GT3rsr with straigt pipes would rattle my ears a bit, but you can always wear ear plugs.

ditto on those DAMN OBNOXIOUS Mazdas! Is it REALLY necessary?!
I've run a "down turned" pipe where the cat would be on my 944 turbo, mainly because the less backpressure on a turbo the better, HOWEVER... with the said... I did manage to start a "tincy" litle brush fire when I had an off..
just something to think about... FWIW... there was no problem with either the track or the racing club...
"Ooops...did *I* do that?"

Burning Brakes
The worst I ever heard was a Rotus - a rotary in a Formula Ford with about an 18 inch pipe. Not just the ear-splitting volume, but the pitch was just right to drill through your brain. Even my eyeballs hurt.

Thanks for the input guys. Reason I bring it up was that after I broke my exhaust at the track I decided to go with full straight pipe set-up on my 944 NA. I was running a stock system with cat and muffler. We do not have any local noise restrictions on any tracks in this area, but some of the racers in one of groups I was going to run the 944 in did not like it. They said it was too loud and annoying. They decided to change the rules to require mufflers (flowmasters or open supertrapps were considered ok) just for their group. Well I found that very strange and not warrented. I had come to the same concluson you guys did about sound. I came here just to make sure I was not way off base.
Thanks guys I guess I am not crazy A-hole for thinking it is OK run with an open exhaust! <img src="graemlins/xyxwave.gif" border="0" alt="[bigbye]" />
BTW... These guys race in run group with RX-7's.. Go Figure...

I have run my 89 944 turbo in class E with an
open exhaust since 2000. No problems.

I ran a 944na with straight pipes for a few seasons. While it was loud, you're right, not many cars are Mazda loud!
The problem with the Mazda's cadenced idle has to do with the rotary engine's ports. And it's volume is an unfortunate side effect of the engine design. They require very special (and expensive) mufflers to handle the extreme heat of these engines. Many of the people who have tried these mufflers end up just burning them up anyway. We have a peripheral port RX7 that has exceeded 126db... thank goodness the track had no sound limits.

David
