Doubtful I can find one in the $30k price range...

Test drove a Ford Sport Trac on my lunch hour. Some thoughts:
- Definately roomier and more comfortable than the Dakota. Head room is not an issue with the Ford, while the Dakota was awfully tight (At 6'2", it is a concern) And the Sport Trac certainly doesn't ride like a dump truck, like Larry's and Jupeman's rides!
- More car-like feel, but I think the Ford sits a little higher than the Dakota, so it did have a slightly more top-heavy feel.
- Fit and finish seem better in the Ford vs. the Dodge. Again, the Ford is based on an SUV, while the Dodge is essentially a pickup truck, so this isn't surprising.
- I test drove the V6, which had plenty of power sans trailer, but will definatley opt for the V8, if the final choice is the Ford.
- I do like the styling better than the Dakota, and I like it better than the traditional Ford Explorer SUV - the Sport Trac looks more purposeful in my eyes.

Need to get the wifey to check it out, and I should check out the Toyota 4Runner/Tacoma as well.

Thanks for all the input, folks.

New trailex or used. Josh is selling his open trailer, was Hogans. You could get it for cheap.

Just pony-up for one of those nice diesel trucks and forget about all this "compromise" stuff.

Everyone else is doing it Z! Give in to the peer-pressure...

Z-,

Why not a certified Tundra-Xtra Cab?

ps, I'll write that article that IOU! Outsider's guide to NNJR DE survival. I'll be on my best behavior to avoid the dreaded BFL.

Hey Z - There are few things more fun than driving around in a big diesel pickup truck! Think about it!

Plus you get all kinds of respect. I drove mine down to Bumf*ck Virginia, and you would have thought that I pulled up to a DE in an Enzo. Everywhere I parked it I got questions and compliments. It's a different culture out there in a Pick 'em up, especially in a big Diesel.

Diesel will be a bit more than $30K, but you can pay now or pay later... Isn't a Sport-Trac a Ford Explorer with an open rear compartment? Not something I personally would want to pull with. I started with a Chevy 1/2 ton 2X and it scared me enough to go out and buy a proper truck...quick.

Dood, are you 'tarded? It's not a pick 'em up! And get some real tires for those wheel wells. It looks like a guy with skinny legs in baggy shorts.

Yeah, those are what it came with, complete with a pressure monitoring system. Lots of ground clearance, even though it's only 2WD. But the skinny (245 section) tires are good for fuel economy & in the rain.
