Oh no! (Yet another tow vehicle thread)

There are also some very good deals on newer, used Suburbans on eBay, especially the 3/4 ton (2500) models which excel at towing. IMO, they are not as good as diesel pick ups, but much more liveable day to day. Also, my2007 model is actually about 2' shorter than the crew cab GMC/Chevy pickup I was also considering....so it actually fits in my garage.

Question about hitches --
How important is it to have a weight distributing hitch? I know that it helps significantly with heavier enclosed trailers, but how beneficial is one for a lighter, open trailer - 4,000 to 5,000 lbs. max? (Figure the truck is rated for ~ 7000 lb towing capacity).
Thanks,
-Z

Trailex says not to use a weight distributing hitch on their open trailers. IIRC what my dad was telling me. I've never had a problem towing our Trailex with the Tahoe and it does not have a weight distributing hitch.

Well, I just put a deposit down on this:
A Ford Explorer Sport Trac Limited V8. Specs:
Dark Cherry Metallic Exterior / Dark Charcoal leather interior
4.6 Liter V8 (Same motor as in the Mustang GT ) / 6-speed auto / 4x4
Trailer towing package
Cargo cage / Tonneau Cover
Power Adjustable pedals (For Mrs. Z-man)
The all important towing numbers:
Curb weight: 4793 lbs
Payload: 1390 lbs
GVWR: 6193 lbs
GCWR: 12,000 lbs
Towing capacity: 6990 lbs
Had to do a factory order since I didn't get all the "popular" options (like a 6-disk CD changer, keyless entry...etc). So at best, the truck will be ready in 6-8 weeks - just in time for the track season!

Update. Finally picked up my new Sport Trac this past Saturday. It was worth the wait! Really nice ride - quiet and smooth. They say don't tow for the first 500 miles -- I'm going to add another 500 and hopefully get 1,000 miles on the clock before I start towing with it. First major trip will be out to Mid-Ohio in mid-June (8 hour trip). Plan on taking it to a couple of local autocrosses prior to that.

Larry - I should have clarified -- I plan on using it to tow my 944S2 to a couple of local autocrosses. And yes, they do have classes for my 944.
