Post Kumho V700 vs. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup

From the reading I've done around here, it seems like the MPSC has a slight edge over the V700?

Are we in agreement over this? I've been running the V700 successfully for 2 years, but if I can get an edge with the MPSC I'd like to try it...

Any thoughts?

Hello,

The Michelin tire is better than the Kumho.

However, it's also a lot more money, like twice the price.
It also doesn't come in the same sizes.

If you're racing, then the Michelin is a better tire.
For DE, it all depends on your budget, desires, etc.

How many weekends you get out of your Kumho's ?
I agree with club racing in mind you should opt for the MPSC's . I run them and have been very pleased with them. 3 DE weekends and 1 club race weekend later they still look they can take as much track time.

I will put a vote in for Toyo Proxies RA1s, I ran a whole season on them in the 911 Cup here in SF CA. One of the spec cars also running Toyos set new track records for the PCA class he was in. So they are fast. And they do last.

I got at least 40 hours of track time on my and still going.....

at twice the price, the Kuhmo's seem a better option since you get to spend more time on new tires (two sets vs. one set)as a percentage

this is given that they have almost equal performance between the two...

Kuhmo's are good tires but they overheat too quickly. MPCS have more stick but take longer to warm up. In cold weather they are a handful.

Granted this is tougher to do if your racing enduro's, but for DE it's fine.

I agree about the size limitation. Like Graig said they need at least a lap to warm up and its tougher on cold/damp days. Butonce they are up and running... Both races I did performance stayed very consistent till the end.

Looking at the rate you consume your Kumho's then the MPSC's would actually cost you cheaper on the long run. I clearly estimate getting a total of 8 or more weekends out of them which means in your case you need 2 sets of Kumhos instead of 1 MPSC, therefore are cheaper to run.

Well I picked up a set of MPSC's... Question is now, what pressure.

On Kumhos I did well ending up at like 29F/31R or so... Are the MPSC's similar or more like Hoosiers that like 39-40?

There's another thread on MPSC's somewhere....you might search for it. Net, MPSC's should be 32 to 35, hot. Michelin has a pretty good data sheet on the MPSC's on their web site.

Okay, so suppose the equation is altered a bit. I DE for fun but compete in autocrosses. Which do you own then? I have Kumhos on my 996, which have plenty left on 'em after about 10 autocrosses, a 1000 street miles and no DEs. The Kumhos heat rapidly, which is a plus for autocross. If I was doing pure DE, I'm sure the sports are a better deal, but what about when you do both and are too poor (or lazy) to own both?

RJay, good question - i've never been able to get a straight answer on this question. i primarily autox and do a DE every so often. i used to run the pirelli pzero c dry - an awesome tire. lasted a long time, great traction (better than kumhos) and heated up fast while holding itself together. Given that the tire was discontinued i was faced with the same question. ultimately i went with the kumhos because I think the fast heat up gets you better traction on an autox. but i think i'm ripping through mine quickly. after one autox they showed significant wear.

so i'd really like to know other people's opinion on whether MPSC or Kumhos....

Having owned both and done DE and autocross with them here is my .02...

Kuhmos... great for AutoX, can be comfortably driven on the street in all temperatures, were is uneven and they have a tendency to chunk and delaminate. If you drive them hard on the track, them will MELT and start sliding. If you drive well, this level comes on pretty quick.

MPCS... probably best suited to club racing. These tires have to be HOT to stick, but once they get that hot they are great. They can be street driven, but not when it is very cold. They wear very evenly. The problem is that during a typical DE at 90% of your car's capabilities, you will not get them hot enough to really grip. They are progressive and predictible.

Hoosiers... Track and AutoX only, cannot be used on the street due to a lack of steel belts. They come in two compunds, one for autox and one dor track. The autox compund is THE fastest autox tire. The tires heat up quicker than the MPCS but grip almost as well. The grip difference to the MPCS is minimal. Some testing found them to be 1 second slower around Watkins Glen. That is within the margin of error. They tend to be a little less predictable and if you overheat them they get slippery really fast.

Ed-

Which type of Kuhmo have you tried for Autocross, the Victoracer or the Ecsta? I have tried both and feel that perhaps the Victoracer is a little easier to drive.

Curious how others feel the two tires compare for Autocross <img border="0" alt="[burnout]" title="" src="graemlins/burnout.gif" />
