Question 944 Tranny Rebuild Advice

Last weekend at the track my syncros went out on my 944 LSD transmission. I ended up doing lots of heel-toe, double clutching, and cussing in order to downshift. Good news, I clearly understand why to heel-and-toe.

I'm looking for some opinions on getting this thing rebuilt in SoCal. My mechanic doesn't do tranny rebuilds so we may need to send it out.

Who should I talk to? TIA

Jeff

Well,
When I first built my spec car finished the engine swap and then realized the syncros were shot. In my case I used replace the tranny with one from my parts car. Both were NON-LSD units.
I have yet to rebuild the one I took out. I figured I'd tackle the job one day. That was over 2 years ago!

In my 944 Turbo I had the gearbox rebuilt by Chris Cervelli of Technodyne. I wanted it done right and his is local for me.
Cost was abotu $700 including all new syncros and labor to do it. I removed the box and gave it to him and then reinstalled myself.

Now if you did not have an LSD the easy answer is to look at a junk yard for one. I hear going rate is $400. Take 2 hrs to replace any you are done.
Now since you have the trick LSD... It probably makes more sense to have it rebuilt.

I have done all the work on my spec car including an engine rebuild. The only thing I have not done is a tranny rebuild.

My mechanic mentioned he knew of someone in Arizona who could do the rebuild - maybe that was Technodyne. I fear shipping could cost as much as the rebuild.

In the meantime, we're going to throw a turbo tranny in just to get me back on track. Though it would be out of spec for 944-spec, I'm thinking this would actually be a disadvantage considering the gearing.

Yeah a turbo tranny is NOT and advantage.

As for shipping cost...
The tranny weighs about 100-150 lbs. Not really that much, but I have no idea of shipping costs.

Good Luck

I bit the bullet on a rebuilt NA tranny from Ian's in Florida this week. We'll see how it turns out. He ships them UPS at about 135 lbs (costs about $90 to ship insured to me in the Chicago area).

RIP my R&P

Dave,
Sorry to hear about the Tranny, at least it will be fresh for this season!!!
Jeff,
I know of a guy in Ohio that does fantastic tranny work. Guru Greg Fishman hooked me up with him. He does tranny work for many of the pro race teams. I dont know if he does 944's but my guess is that he does. As for freight, I have used www.BAXGLOBAL.com for large items, cost less than fedex, ups, ect. DAS roll bar, un boxed, less than 90.00 to Fl. from Chicago (weight about 68lbs)
Let me know if you want the # to the guy in Oh.

Yup, all booked some time ago. I reserved for both weekends a ways back. I still need to get one for Gingerman 2-day DE mid-summer.

Eric - I would like the contact info for the guy in OH! I've picked up an LSD for my car, trying to hunt down a shorter rear end, and will either have to muddle through it myself or farm it out... if he does deal with the 016's, I'd be interested to talk to him and find out what it might cost for total rebuild and upgrades...

Ian rebuilt my tranny - with the exception of shipping costs (not his fault, just a fact of being in rochester ny, and in a hurry) it was an excellent experience. I'm certain for the west coast, Chris @ Technodyne does an amazing job too, i've been very happy thus far in my dealings with him. Good luck!!

I'm still diagnosing the problem. One theory is that the clutch or linkage is bad, the other is the ring and pinion is bad, yet another wants the needle gear to be bad (whatever that is). I fear I will end up replacing the clutch and rebuilding the tranny.
