Converting a Porsche to a TUV...
... a Track Utility Vehicle. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Eek!]" src="eek.gif" />
This is a Thule Rack (w/ gutter towers) and "Playpen" cargo box. I got the idea from Jack Olsen, and it seems to work great for transporting 4 wheels/tires to the track. Apparently Yakima makes a similar system.

Do you have the Playpen extension, or just the basic?
I was planning on just using the Thule bars, and stand up the tires between the bars: you think that's too unstable?

I don't have the Playpen extension. I'm not exactly sure what configuration you are implying, but I think that as long as it is sufficiently tied down with ratcheting cables, you should be fine.
I wish that the Playpen was just a little wider, so that I could fit 4 tires across (standing up), instead of just 3.
FYI, the Thule bars are only rated for something like 165 lbs. Technically, that's not enough. However, I was told by the salesperson that 200+ lbs. would be fine. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

I take it you have 17's? I have 16's, so I may just be around the 165lbs limit of the roof racks.
The configuration I'm implying is just using the bars, and placing the tires between the bars standnig up: kinda like what you have, but without the basket, with the bars closer together, and a the tires sitting lower.
BTW: I think your fairing is mounted wrong: shouldn't it be mounted underneath the playpen, and so that it's between the bars and the roof of your car? That's how I mount mine, and how I've seen others mount them.
