Post 944 weights

I also posted this on the 944 forum, but someone here may know better. Does anyone know the definate weights of all years of US model 944's? I looked in the faq, but all the weights for 83-85.5 was same and so was 86-89. Someone stated the 86 model was the lightest. Does anyone know by how much?

I'm interested as I'm trying to find the best model to start with for PCA club racing and SCCA ITS. I was going to get a 89 2.7L, but it looks like the 88 2.5 with 158hp or a 86 may be the best, especially considering the minimum weight requirements for PCA.

Thanks!

Bill

Bill I am doing the same thing as you are. I have an 86 944, why an 86 because I got a really good deal on a straight, clean car. I wouldn't worry too much about the weight of each 944(not that big of a difference), but more on finding a nice 944 to start with. I think and someone can correct me if I am wrong, if you want a manual rack you have to get an 83(kinda nice for a track car) but you could just convert a power rack into a manual(trying to find out how to do this myself).

In scca you are allowed to gut the interior so no matter what year car you pick you should be able to get it down to the 2715# min. for a 2.5L. If you want to go with the 2.7L(I wouldn't) you get hit pretty hard in scca with a 2865# min. and really not that many more horses. In scca you can update/backdate, so if you find a nice 84 you can put an 88 2.5 engine in it.

Thanks for the feedback. It seems like there are more 86 and 87's available. Have you weighed your 86? If all 85.5 to 88's all weight about the same, it would appear the 88 would be the fastest with the 158hp engine. And what is your thought on the early offset wheels/suspension vs the 87+ cars? I would think ABS would be a good thing for saving the tires and in the rain.

I also plan on autocrossing it for the first year and that is why the model year is so important to me. I'm only allowed to do limited mods and any small advantage is desirable.

I like the 83-86 with the early offsets because you can use the Fuchs that are light, strong(forged), and can be had for a decent price. These(Fuchs) will not fit the 87+ cars because of the offset. The ABS is great especially like you said in wet conditions, but you have to check with the rule book and see if you can even use ABS. I know in SCCA ITS you are not allowed to run ABS. I know PCA has a couple classes you can run the 944 in, Stock and Prepared I think, but I don't know if you can use ABS in these classes. I for one like everything manual(steering, brakes, tranny, etc.) it gives you real feedback. Check out this thread: http://bbs.sccaproracing.com/ubb/For...ML/000509.html

Oh and I haven't weighed the car yet, sorry.

Bill,

I realize that you're looking for weights of NA 944s, but I thought I may mention that I have weighed my '88 Turbo S at a truck scale a while back. It registered at just under 3160 w/a full tank of gas, spare in the back, stock stereo, all options, but no one, or anything extra (clothing, CDs, trash, etc) inside... This holds up fairly well w/most of the "test" weights in the magazines, although I've seen some list the curb weight as about 3150 w/the test around 3300, but the scale I used also weighed me right at 180, and when I got home, so did my bathroom scale, so I assume it to be fairly accurate. Good luck finding the weights of the NAs...

I weighed my bosses' '88 turbo s in POC
Production class race trim last week, ie; roll bar, fire ext., no carpet, spare, jack, etc in back, coil over rears, 9" & 10" wheels with Kumhos, etc.
3104# with 1/2 tank of gas and no fat Greek boss in the car.
