What are they doing exactly? Other than growing hair on the sidewall?

Those pics are from 09/06 not 05. Never bother to set the date.
That hair is the cord or belt in the tire that has broken and is sticking out of the rubber sidewall. The tire then goes out of round because of the bump which is visible in the last pic. As I said before, that is after just 4 laps. If I continued to drive on it the result would have been the same as Analog Mike's.
At first Michelin said that there was no warranty on race tires but after decided to send me a new one.

That is weird. I've never seen or heard of that. Glad you caught it in time.

Any reason why they would do that?

And I was thinking of trying these tires...

I think it was in the 25lb range with a target of 30-32 hot. It was a mild September day.

Andy
Doesn't the 2000 cup use different sizes than the 2004? You might be okay.

I've run them on my street GT3. They will not be as fast as the Michelins, but will have more "fast" heat cycles. We ran the D5s in the front & the slightly harder D4s in the back.

I spoke to Jeff Spear at Hoosier, they are just about to make a cup sized tire that will compete with Michelin slicks, hopefully we might see the first batch in October! I signed up to get the first set.

Andy out West the Yoko's are the second choice. Not as grippy initially, but they should cycle better. We use them in the Yoko Cup Series which will be at Laguna weekend after next. You'll want to run less camber with Yokes too. Some guys here have had success with Dunlaps but they're expensive...
