In-car video: 996 spins out in turn 8 at WSIR
At the track for TT with the AROSC last weekend.....
The camera angle is not the best (a little low). The camera must have gotten bumped at the starting grid.
This video is of my neighbor (buddy) in my car His 911 SC has a motor in the process of being re-built and I "offered" to share rides at the event trusting his ability based on years of SCCA experience at WSIR. I now question my judgement about this decision.... .and before anyone asks, yes, we are still talking and sharing We laugh about it now.... well one of us does.. .
He had just turned a 1:36 and a 1:35 and was feeling confident before this happened....
Car was fine, no major damage other than a chipped side view mirror and some scratched plastic and lower panel tape at the right rear tire..... The oil leak that occurred shortly after this incident was not related, I will post more about that later...

Any idea what caused it? I ask, because -- scary as it feels -- it's not very easy to spin that early in 8. Usually, you'd need something on the track surface (oil or coolant) in order to break loose at that point.
I've had it happen for me there when my rear toe settings had slipped out of whack.

I spent the rest of the day trying to figure it out. It came out pretty quickly. The PSS9's were on full soft which seemed to make the car feel pretty soft all around. Is it possible the left rear suspension bottomed in the bumps there?
We increased the damping settings after that.
Also the car did start leaking oil in the next session (the other issue mentioned above) so possibly it spun on its own oil.
The only way to find out might be fix the oil leak and try it WFO again with higher damping settings. Let me know when you're ready. (Ha ha, just kidding! I'll have the SC ready for next time.)

i don't know how you guys like the setup but when i drove a 996 w/ pss9's for 3 days at vir, i found the susp to be lacking, to say the least. they were cranked to the max and the car was still too soft for my liking. great sporty/street susp, but for the track, it wasn't enough.

Hey Neighbor...
Oil leak fixed.... pick her up tonight....
C4bliss,
There was pucker factor in the pits too..... nothing like seeing your car going backward thru 8...
The ability to rib my neighbor endlessly for the next 24 hours was priceless tho.....

I agree with Leh. Very slow on the wheel. Couldn't tell from the sound, were you on the gas at all, or just coasting? If you were coasting, that would be it. 911s do not like to be cornering with no throttle.

Very slow on the wheel? You guys kill me...WSIR is not the parking lots you are used to. Good luck catching a big slide at 125 mph.
I was flat out all the way from turn 5. In other words not lifting at all. When you turn a similar time to the other lap I posted (or even close) in the same car, then you can call me slow.
Also once you start trying different tires you will find that some tires break away quicker than others. But since you know how fast I was steering without seeing my hands, and how much throttle I was giving it with no data, you probably know what tires I was running and the pressures as well right?

When I had the M3, I topped out at about 130 MPH on that turn. I can't figure it out from watching the video. Do you think you needed to have the wheel straightened out a little more, given the bump?
