Default Do tires have a shelf life?

Are you better off buying them right before you go out? Or is it ok to store them over the winter if they are brand new?

Tires do have a shelf life, but storing them over the winter will not be a problem. I recommend storing them in a dry area and laying them on their side.

Funny this comes up as earlier today I called Hoosier about my R6s that only have one heat cycle on them. He (Jeff?) said to do as mentioned above (bag room temp). He said they would harden slightly, but would be fine. I then asked him what this would mean in terms of lap times and he said less than a tenth, which was good to hear.

All good info. I would add that you might want to check the "born" date on your tires. It's stamped on the side wall and coded by week and year. For example 3306 would mean manufactured the 33rd week of 2006. The newer the tire the better chance of optimal performance.

Some tires crack in winter temps so watch for that. Since they are belted I don't know if it amkes them any less safe but they can certainly loose air.

Hoosier rep told me that hard freeeze will damage the compound. Not just using them when cold but letting them freeze at all. I don't quite get how but they know tires and I don't so my fat stack of slightly used X race tires will be kept in a corner of the shop and not in the shed.
