Default Daytona USA

Made the trip to Daytona on Saturday and it was a great day ... friendly people, great Porsches on and off the track, perfect weather (maybe a bit windy for the drivers) and some awesome racing. I do have a few questions for those folks that participated:

1 - how many sets (4) of tires did you go through during the 3 days?
2 - Are there any modifications necessary to the engine lubrication system due to the high banking at Daytona?

One more request, please describe the experience of driving on the high banking.

Regards, Dave

One set of Hoosiers was plenty for the weekend. I ran old ones on Friday and put a new set on for the races. The only big difference was the significant increase in pressure. My cold starting pressures were around 24 lbs for a targeted hot of 35.

I have a 996 so obviously there were no oiling issues.

The experience? I think most would agree that the track was much narrower and much rougher than expected. I've never liked NASCAR but I have great repect for anyone that can run these tracks at those speeds for 500 miles. So...Friday, sheer terror. Saturday, a blast. Sunday, by the end of the enduro, old hat. I'll be back though.

glad to hear that you aren't experiencing any oiling issues with your 996. i have started using kumho v710s (still getting used to the grip) and i haven't experienced any low pressure. of course, none of the tracks i drive have sustained high g-loading like daytona.

no x51 oiling kit for your car?

I was sort of kidding about the oiling problem. I have the X51 oiling kit but I have no idea if I was losing pressure in the corners. My top data acquisition recorded speed of 161.2 mph was in a banked corner. In my car that's an indicated speed of over 170. Believe me I wasn't looking at the oil pressure guage.

The 996 worked great though.

Carlos, you'll love the Kumos.

That's a great way to sum it up! I felt/feel exactly the same way.

It was a great experience. I hope to be back too. Maybe I should start working on that new motor now. What do you think Jim?

Larry:

Apparently the security guard bilked me! He was do take care of your engine before the race. Think I can get my $500 back?

David

PS- We will be back next year. I offered to by Phil's engine but he's going to rebuild the car. I need a Euro 3.8 for my RS!

No, it ran fine. Just not enough go against the "300 hp" RSCSs and the "350 hp" 996 X51s at a horsepower track like Daytona. I don't think that I can count on being that lucky again next year.

The Carrera RS was a 3.6 model. There were some very low production cars with the Turbo body and a 3.8 engine, called the Carrera RS 3.8.

edit: not paying attention, ignore as usual! 993 = 3.8 of course.

Are you thinking 964? We're talking 993 here, in which case all RS & RS CS', to my knowledge, were 3.8s...

(Dave's car is a 993 and Phil's engine would have been out of his 993 RS CS.)

All 993 RS's had 3.8's in them. If you are running as a 993 RS and aren't running a 3.8 you aren't legal.

Yeah, but I don't see having an advantage by running a 3.6.
