Daytona USA '06 Update
#76
Leh--I know this is not the "at speed" pic you are looking for, but I really appreciate the time you took to talk to me on several occasions, as well as the pic. You were scary fast into 5!! On several occasions I started to reach for my flagger to have him put out a yellow because I didn't think you could make the turn--needless to say, you just kept on going!
Regards, Doug

anyone have the gold enduro results yet?
i think everyone split before the awards/results ...
not sure if it could be called a race after the double yellow / black flag restart fiasco - whoever had a pit stall at the end of pit lane was allowed to restart ahead of the line of cars?!?

Thanks for all the concern about my crash it turn 5, which started at turn 4. More damage was caused by the tow truck to the exhaust system than the front end. None of the radiators, oil cooler burst. Hope we all had a great time at such a famous track, it was a blast at speed.

It was great to meet so many Rennlisters--Leh, Larry H, Colin, Dr. J, Sergio P, Mac M, and others I'm probably forgetting. I was absolutely floored by the quality of the racing. In 3 days of racing I did not see any contact between cars in turn 5 despite hard racing, inside passes (and a few outside), and passing in the middle of the turn. You really used your mirrors well!
Unfortunately, I met 4 drivers after hard contact with the armco or tire wall.
Ernie J--I saw you skating straight across the turn and thought, @#$%%, this is going to be bad! When I saw you hit the tire wall and end up at 45 degrees I couldn't believe you were unscathed. When walking you over to our station you were totally calm and collected talking about winning the Targa NewFoundland.
Just glad you were ok! A 911 backed into the armco at high speed 25' before my station. My flagger and I ran backwards, and I saw blue streaks going past my head. He hit it so hard he broke off 3 6x6 posts used to support the armco, and that is what went flying past my head--too close for comfort...we were also showered with glass which was scattered for 50' on our side of the armco. We were both shaken by the experience...
Later a Cup car hit the armco between 4 and 5--I ran down and watched as the driver pushed the door open and it fell onto the ground. Just glad he was ok. On Sunday a 944 came in backwards at high speed and hit the armco exactly where we were standing--scared the @##%$ out of us, but glad everyone was ok. Just 3 more days on a corner...despite the close calls, great racing by you guys/girls and lots of stories to tell!

Then I see this same guy squeeze a guy within an inch of the wall on the backstraight because he was getting a run on him. I wish my video hadn't stopped working or I would send the video to the scruits, that kind of driving isn't just unsportsmanlike, it is down right dangerous. I don't even like to think about what could have happened.

My Laps had the gold enduro up this morning now the enduro results are gone...hmmmm me thinks there may be a bit of confusion eh?
Hey Doug, good talking to you in the paddock area. I could tell you were still shook up. Neat talking about other races I've run that you have worked. I'll hope to see you back at Sebring this year Lord willing. BTW, I have a full face shield helmet I'm not wearing anymore...want to use it for the races?

Really enjoyed the time I spent with you as well, Mac! Didn't realize I was still so wired--2 of the incidents this past weekend were the closest I have had including doing many pro races. You guys have no idea how fast you LOOK coming out of the kink at 4 on the run to 5. I'll have to petition SCCA to let me wear my drivers suit and full-face helmet track-side. I'll gladly accept your helmet with autograph at Sebring in February!! See you then.

i think this is the same car that would skip grid... and wait on pit road.. then pull out rite infront of me everytime.. while every OTHER person was rolling with the pak like they were suposed too....
he screwed me on my 2nd or 3rd lap of qualifying.. had to pass him in turn 1...
