How come you didn't go to a charlie or fabcar or similar arm when you did the based on what you've seen with the OEM/boxed combination. These are clearly far better than the OEM setup - though they still can fail (pin failures)

Hey;
Hmmm. That IS ugly, even before it broke!
That is the most common failure for the early arms. If you look at how they are made - which is clear in the photos - you can see that there is not much holding that barrel on. Joe is right that boxing the rest only makes it worse. No give any where else. They were designed for a VW Rabbit, after all.
For what it's worth, my reinforced steel arms never cracked, and the barrel was not wrapped. If you look at a Fabcar arm, you will see this wrap that Vaughan speaks of.
Before mine could fail thusly - especially before I went all spherical - I fabricated new tubular arms. I call them my Paris-Dakkar control arms. No chance of them breaking.

YUP, I agree. I have been making control arms forever.
This is the lastest revision. I this one is for my new car.

I have the arms in different lengths.The one in the my photo is 1/4" longer than an early one .
The jig I made is ajustable for length in 1/16 increments.
That is the best part of being able to make this stuff yourself. I can make any length
