Although you said you wanted to avoid the professional schools you may want to consider either the Skip Barber or Jim Russell driving (as opposed to racing) schools. The 2 day skip barber driving school teaches all the basic car control skills (skid pan, threshold braking, smoothness in direction change, car balance etc etc) for ablut the cost of 2 weekends of GGR DE. With those under your belt the entry into DE is muuch more relaxed and you can progress faster than if you are learing the basics at the same time asa dealing with learning about the track and speed.
