Need help selecting rear spoiler, PCA G stock
#31
My 78 SC had a fiberglass rear hatch on it when I got it and it sure looked like a stock piece, i.e. a perfect fit and no sign of "aftermarket" on it. I changed it simply because I like the solid spoiler vs. te rubber edged one. IF it is stock and was either standard eqipment or special order the way I have had the rules explained is as long as it was avialable as oem then it is legal. Now I could be way off as I certainly didn't buy the car new..

Hi flatsics, your good, pointed response has me laughing. However we could debate so many points....like the fact that 911's enjoy a power to weight advantage in EVERY stock class. Really the reason for wanting lexan rear hatches is that it would be safer. The consequences of a rear hit in a 944 are much more likely and dangerous than in a 911 in regards to the rear glass. They are also all old and delaminating. It would admitedly lower our center of gravity and make the mounting of spoilers and or wings easier. If not changed, then the rules should be enforced for all.

Why not just pick up an OEM Turbo tail off the rennlist classifieds? It will attach to your stock decklid. I have heard (I may be wrong) that the Turbo tail actually provides some downforce, while the Carrera tail only reduces lift.
I've raced against plenty of F class Carreras and seen plenty of G clas SCs running with turbo tails and have never heard of it being an issue.
For clarification, email Donna Amico as others have suggested.

"It has been allowed since way before my time for 911s to replace the rear
deck lid when adding a spoiler, and this just about always means that the
deck lid is a lightweight material, e.g. fiberglass. If the car normally
has an AC condenser mounted to the deck lid, you have to figure out how to
mount the AC condenser to the fiberglass -- the condenser cannot be removed
or relocated."

Donna's response posted here with her permission. So why can't 944's add a lightweight panel attached to a different spoiler like 911's?

Bill - thanks very much for Donna's response.
Gary - I wonder if my 82 would have to retain the A/C stuff since I don't believe it was an option for that year. I was told by other club racers that removing the A/C stuff would be unlikely to be protested as long as I maintained the compressor.

Jay - Is it possible for you to check with someone that is a tech scrutineer for your area? Hate to see you get called on something.. The shop that built my car and advises me IS a tech guy for PCA Club Racing so I pretty much trust everything he tells me..
