My rotors are not shiny. I've always had a visible grey layer on the rotors. Hell, even the rotors on my Volvo wagon have a visible transfer layer

As long as they are not juddering (i.e uneven layer), then you're fine IMO.

I'm always knocked down when drivers complain that track pads are not rotor friendly.....what's really not rotor-friendly is track driving..........

FYI, bedding the brakes as Pagid directed took a bit of time, but they worked great on the track after driving there. After a 25 minute session the yellow color on the sides of the pads had turned grey for about half of the pad's thickness. The pads were good and the brakes on this car are amazing.

Chris, how did you like the near freezing rain today? On slicks, I never could get heat in them. It was fun chasing down cars on treads and rain slicks, (sliding through every turn). I have some good video and will transfer to dvd.

Bob, I must be doing something really wrong. Scott said I looked best drving in the rain--pacing myself to catch the other cars at passing points and not getting bogged down behind the slower vehicles. (Of course I had the fastest car in my group. Surprise!) I was on RA-1s and they worked well, heating up sufficiently. I'll look for the DVD at the next meeting!

Funny incident, Tony S was at pit out during the very wet track time. I was stuck with my old MPSC's (no tread) in the cold. He was chatting with my wife and looking over her shoulder at track out of turn 5 as he saw my car at about 30degs drifting up to the wall. After 2laps, he finally said " Shannon, I don't think you want to turn around yet". Glad you stuck out the rain. I am convinced it is the best time to learn car control.

Bob,
Your turn 5 "move" was great to see. I was at the perfect angle to watch the show. I'm glad your wife did not see it first hand.

Chris,
I do bed my Pagid yellows/blacks. I have been getting much better wear with the yellow/black combo vs the oranges. Also, keep an eye on your mirrors, Sharon finally found the gas pedal......

Ok, Tony. I'll have to stop bedding my pads and get on the fun pedal.

Tony, actually I have to look out for Shannon since she is in my run group. I'm anxiously awaiting Chris into the white group.

As for the rain, I think that Friday was great for learning - especially with the large puddles between 4b & 5.

Avoid the puddles! Trust me on this one.

on Friday it was difficult to avoid the puddles and still make the turn onto the bowl.

BTW, the noise, and subsequent check engine light, was due to a bad cat, which is getting replaced tomorrow. Brian K. had the same noise and the exact same issue.

How much is the cat going to cost you?

the cats are covered by my cpo warranty so there is no cost.

I'm hoping to get the car back today or tomorrow. the cats are coming from Atlanta.

I did the same thing on my 996. The noise was horrendous at idle and made me wonder whether I was having valve problems, until I reved the motor and the pressure held the baffling against the side of the cats so it remained quiet.

Check your plugs. Sometimes fouled plugs can cause unburnt fuel to enter the cat where it ignites and blows out the ceramic baffling. You don't want to blow the new cats out right away . . .
