Grand Am/Grand Am Cup/Rolex entry fee costs vs purse payouts?
Hey Gang,
I'm sure somebody knows the answer to this.
I was thinking about the recent race at VIR, and I remembered my wife asking me how much those guys made for racing in that race, and I told her I didn't have a clue.
I was curious to know what the entry fees were/are for the races in Grand Am/Grand Am cup/Rolex vs the purse money awarded for, say first place in class, maybe using the VIR race as an example?
Anyone know the answer. I'm just curious.

It's the answer to the old riddle, " What's the difference between NASCAR and IMSA?"
In NASCAR, you race a 30 thousand dollar car for a million dollar purse; In IMSA, you race a million dollar car for a 30 thousand dollar purse.
Of course, there's the other answer, too. In Nascar, the fans know the names of all the drivers; In IMSA, the drivers know the names of all the fans.

Well, pretty much in Rolex (like all other high pro levels), it takes 10mil to make 1mil.
So, noone can really profit just from the racing, it'll mostly be networking and corp sponsorship/advertising that is achieved.
Drivers usually don't make much, and usually the drivers rent the seats out for a lot of money for the single weekend.
Normally, someone does not professional race to make millions, you have an easier chance of winning the lottery

I think the fees are around $1k to $2k depending on whether you sign-up for test-n-tune etc. I don't know the winning potential.

Looks like I found what I was looking for:
http://www.grandamerican.com/CONTENT...agunaPurse.pdf
This is the purse info for the Laguna Seca race this weekend.
Now I don't have to be curious any longer. I have a definitive answer to my question.

Brian,
A good friend looked very closely at the IMSA GT3 Cup Challenge series. He has the car, and a team to run with, so his estimates were actual costs per race weekend - entry fees. insurance, transport, etc. His take was that the average for the season ran around $15K/weekend, not counting any mechanical or bodywork issues that might arise. Clearly not a break-even proposition, but I doubt that anyone competing in these series expects to break even. The money comes from sponsors or your pocket.

Don't look at the ferrari challenge series then...for what a full season costs you can pretty much buy a new ferrari instead...however for the people competing they can afford that regardless.

Event fees are:
GS/ST...1350.00 per car/race
GT....2600.00
DP....3600.00
As far as drivers pay goes very few get paid. But there are a few who are in the 6 digits range. Most are funded drivers by sponsors and the pay is usually just the fees to get the ride and some may receive some money but not getting rich. The balance and majority in smaller classes are those who pay out of pocket for the ride. A seat in ST/GS car can run 5/10k give or take. GT can run around 35k a seat.

Dal's numbers are fairly close, of course there are spreads. I've heard $35k for a GT porsche seat at the 24 and $9k for a GS 996 seat. Those are in cars that a privateer ownes and tries to recoup some of the weekend cost. If you want to play in DP, you better have clear over a million to run the whole season.
