Hey all:
Need your advice on some other slicks for my 993 track car. I have been using the 245/645/18 and 285/645/18 Pirelli PZero slicks but the prices have increased significantly recently.
Other choices seem to be the Yokohama's and Dunlop's in the following sizes:
Yoko 230/650/18 & 250/650/18
Dunlop 235/640/18 & 265/650/18
These are a bit different in sizing but wondered what others decided to use in place of Pirelli slicks in these sizes.
Thanks for the help!

Kary,
Once you run on Dunlops you will never go back to Pirellis. A "going away" set of Dunlops has more grip than a fresh set of Pirellis. Dunlops heat up quicker and have grip long before the Pirellis. The field is gone before Pirellis are ready to race. Oh by the way, I don't like Pirellis.

I just took a look at Bob Woodman tires. Wow have they jumped up in price. I used to buy sets for the GT3 at $1150, and now they price out to $1400. I guess that it's moot since I have to run R compounds now, seeing as that is what I will be racing on. BTW, Charlie, you can get Dunlops at Sasco Sports in Alton, VA (located at VIR). They are way better than the Yoks.

If GTC1 is anything like the old F troop, ANYTHING found different in your car will show up on everyone else's the next race. I was the first in the East to put 17x8s & 17x9s on a Carrera at Summit Point in 1997, and the very next race everyone else had them too. Talk about a short-lived advantage.

Kary,
I believe you're running a Cup suspension on your car. When I ran a 993 Cup last year, I went with the Yokos in 230/650 and 280/680. The tires were very tall and always looked like they would rub terribly, but somehow it worked. So I think your sizes with the shorter 250/650 should work for you. Note that when I got the car the PO had it set up for Dunlops. Many here will chide you for not using the fastest slick, but since you're not racing save your money.
Michelin has a 27/65-18 rear that I always wanted to try with their standard 24/64-18 fronts on a 993, might work for you?
Re: slick $ increase, I was talking with a tire supplier and he said he's hearing that Michelins may be going up in price as well. Trackside rumor from him was that Michelin has been subsidizing sales and will discontinue that practice.

Thanks guys!
Fitting tires and making adjustments in set ups is always a real pain in the you know what!
The Pirelli's cold crack and since there are few sources out west we are forced to ship across country risking cracking due to whether. Do the Yoko's, Dunlop's or Michelin's cold crack as well?
There are sources out west here for Dunlop and Yoko, not sure about Michelin.

Kary, the softer the tire compound, the more prone it is to cold cracking. We just bought a set of Yokohama Nuevos (the hot setup for a pure street tire) and even they have a cold temp warning to keep them above 15 degrees fahrenheit.

I don't know if they are any good in the US, but Kumhos are making a big push in Europe right now, so for putting a sticker or two on the car you can get a good tyre at a very attractive price - might be worth investigating.

Kary,
I have a set of take off Michelins in the sizes Kevin mentioned, 24/650 and 27 /680. I have seen them run on many 993's in addition to some 964's. I can send You a set of them. If they work out for You then You can just buy takeoffs from me whenever You need them. I have plenty.

When they were $1150 a set, I felt that you could not do better than the Pirellis for performance vs cost. Now that they are over $1400, it is a little harder to justify that, but they will last longer and provide more heat cycles than any other slick. 245/645s and 305/645s fit perfectly.
