Default New AMB Lap Timer Display

I was wondering if anyone had used one of the new AMB Lap Timers that show your lap times on a display in the car? I am curious as to how well it worked and if you could see the display easily. It is my understanding that PCA has updated their software version to allow use of it at the track events this year.

Thanks,

Barry

Barry,

Ask Riley (black M3), he has one and uses it. I'm pretty sure he doesn't think it was worth it. You might be able to pick it up from him fairly cheap, or at least try it out.

Thanks George. I will ask him when I see him. One of my main concerns is whether I will be able to see the display in the car. I was just looking for something to know when I had a good qualifying time during a qualifying session and did not want to go the route of Hot Lap Timer or the aim.

I though you had an aim system? That's all he really uses is for, qualifying. He is wanting to go the aim route. I'm not really sure it's worth the $500 asking price (for a new unit).

I sold the aim with the 04 cup. I had the aim MXL Pista. It was just too much overkill for what I was needing.

I used the new AMB Display IT at Sebring PCA race (as did Rick) and they only worked sporadiaclly. I think only 2 sessions out of the whole weekend.

The folks with them here in the SCCA who I've asked love them. They don't always work but when they do they give you the last word on qualifying times, without having to rely on someone's thumb timing, being repeated to you over a radio. Of course the gameboy with the ICARD does nearly the same thing for half the dough - but the readout on it is too small for me to read incar.

These are best for someone like me who often runs without support at the track. In theory, I could go run 2 or 3 of my best qualifying laps, pull into the hotpit lane and cool things down while seeing if I should go out and try again that session. In reality, I can't usually beat those first laps anyway, but at least I get the news I've been outqualified in the privacy of the car...it's so much more dignified than crying in impound after the session is over.

I use one in the Northeast. They are really handy because they show your overall position (at some point they will show class position as well) and they show elapsed time as well as your lap times.

I have found the lap times to be inaccurate. I think it will get better as more systems get out there. I would do it again. I think it supplements a data system rather than replaces it. Ideally I'd put the data dash above the steering wheel and the AMB system somewhere within easy view.
