Default Front tire size for 944 turbo

I was wondering if I could fit a 245/40/18 on 7.5" wheels on the front of my 1989 944 turbo. This would be for track use paired with 265/35/18 in the rear.
I am planning on using Kumho Ecsta MX tires. Anyone have any experience using these for DE events?

Thanks,

Dave

the 245 should fit in the fender. However I am not sure I would put a 245 on a 7.5" rim. I think an 8" rim (or 8.5 to 9") would be a much better choice.

With my 16's, I run 245-45/16 at all four corners. Works very well in helping dial out the inherent understeer our cars exhibit. I think 245-40/18 may be a bit too tall. You would need at least an 8-inch wide rim for a 245mm width tire.

That said, I would suggest running the same width tire front and rear. Doing so does help improve the handling characterstics of your car. (Also: I'm not a big fan of 18's on a 944.)

The 245 front will depend on the tire and camber settings. I have has MSPC's fit and Hoosiers in the same size rub badly. This is a race set up w/ -2.5 to -3.0 camber. I agree w/the rim width, the 8" would be better. Also most guys are running 275 or 285's in the rear on a 10" rim. I didn't bother to check the overall diameters of the tire sizes mentioned, but 245 may be too big for a 265 in the rear.

A 245/40/18 will not fit under a 951 unless you have some really special offsets, have the fenders rolled to a point that they are 1-1.5 inches flared out. the 40's are just too tall.
Now if your car is SUV height it may not be a issue. I tried 40's on two different sets of rims, CCW and Fikse, neither worked. As Jeff wrote, a MPSC will work in 40 but only with a 235 tire.

We need to know more about your car Dave.

I've run as large as 265/35 18 MPSC (full tread) on the front of my car w/o issue. 8.5x18ET56 wheel. The 245/40 Kumho is a good half inch taller with full tread. That might be a bit too much if you don't have some funky setup.

Without knowing anything about your car, I'd say try the 225/40 or 235/40 (both shaved) on the front and 265/35 or 275/35 rear (again, shave them) instead. Better fit for your wheels too.

Mike,
That is one fat front tire! Did you have custom rims made? I saw a 944s2 running huge hoosier up front once but he had special rims made to fit.

The problem with 40's is they are just too tall in the wheel well

FWIW......There has been a lot of talk about hub failure and a correlation of this occurring on cars with wider wheels, so if your plan is to do this you may want to further investigate. Also if your going to drop the ride height look into upgraded control arm.

Default 245/18 Front Tire

Thanks for all the input. I have seen plenty of 245"s on 944s, but most were on 16" rims. I thought that with an 18" wheels, it might be to tall. Thanks again.

Dave,
You can do the 245, just make sure it is less than 40 aspect and your rim is 8in or better

Nope. BBS RE's. 1-piece forged. 8.5ET56 and 10ET65. Fit perfect with 265/35's and 285/30's. Thinking of selling because it makes little sense to have a set of 18" rims when all my others 17's. I have the "944" fronts which are very very rare.

I'd be interested in the rear wheels...I have the RE's from Apex too, have a second set of fronts but need the second set of rears....

For whatever its worth I run 255/40ZR17 RA1's up front on 8.5" x 17" Fikse with no problems. I have also run 245/40x17 Hoosiers up front as well.

I run Toyo RA-1 245/40/18 up front on an 8 inch rim and 275/35/18 out back on 9 inch rims -2.5 camber all around.. Car under steers under acceleration and I'm running full stiff on the rear bar and harder shock setting in back. I am probably going to try and run 245's all the way around on 9 inch rims.

I would not run a 245 on anything less than an 8 inch rim. You will most likely cause the sidewall to pinch in and therefore increase the diameter of the tire. The tire will also most likely roll over during hard cornering. IMHO.

Turbo Cup cars ran a 10mm difference in tire width front to rear. There is probably a reason why.
