Default Run with the spare?

I am just wondering if you guys run with your spare. I am putting my car on a diet, but am thinking I will leave it in for the crash implications and the fact that my times are actually better with it in. Maybe that would change if I got the car corner balanced w/o the spare in? It is a quick 30 or so pounds and very tempting to remove.

Cup cars don't have them right? Is the tub reinforced then?

Thanks,

Jim

I leave mine in. Mostly because I am lazy. Somewhat because I want to believe the weight will keep the car planted better up front. A little bit for crash protection.

I run with the spare in order to help make weight (and I still run ~50lbs of ballast).

From what I know, street 964's and 993's use the front spare tire as an integral part of the crumple zone. I don't think it's work taking it out. Besides, you'd removing weight from down low and in front of the car, making the already rearward weight distribution bias worse.

Get a smaller battery - that can save you just as much weight in the front.

My weight reduction plans include the loss of 20 to 30 lbs from the object that is located directly behind the steering wheel!

Spare out.

I don't buy that the car is safer with a spare tire acting as a cushion.

I have the opposite problem. It is going to be tough to get my car down to 2,760, but I don't want a mouth full of bumper either.

928 guy here - no spare. Makes it a real PIA to reach the battery in a hurry and I dislike the possibility of projectiles in the case of an off track excursion.

In!! Unfortunately, I have expensive data to back up my preference When I walled the RSA in '04, the front structure completely collapsed around the spare tire/wheel. Remember, a spare wheel layed on it's side is basically an I-Beam in profile. Saved my rear! Plus, I needed the weight too & it is a great place to have it low over the front wheels since our cars are weight challenged up there anyway. My 2 cts.

The spare is part of the crumple zone. The cars are crash tested with the spare in place. That said mine will be coming out for NASA events. It will be in for the reduced PCA events I run this year.
