Do Cup Cars have spares? and if not are they reinforced for impact in some way?
The new ones don't & I'm not sure about extra reinforcement but I don't think they do. My 2 cts.: If you need the weight to make minimum, the location of the spare is hard to beat for adding it anyway. I don't think I have any pics of my smashed RSA but if you guys could see the way the impact literally wrapped the passenger side front structure around that spare that was wedged in there, I think you would be a believer. I sure was glad it was in there!

This was not a good (or perfect) test because there was no re-balance or setup of the car. In reality a true back-to-back would be difficult for the average person to pull off given the time needed to do a proper setup at which point track conditions would have changed, blah blah.

At any rate, I run with my spare in because my fat turbo is required to be even fatter for PCA.

Agreed. That was part of the point that I was making in a later post, that just removing the weight, without adjusting the car may not give the desired result.

Forklift: Have you considered a lightweight battery? I picked up the 15lb odyssey 680 battery as part of my winter weight reduction plan. It obviously doesn't have the reserve capacity of a full size battery, but it will take some weight off the car.

Funny you should mention that. A fellow rennlister just pointed that out to me. I have decided to leave the spare, bumper shocks, and sunroof alone. I will be getting an Odyssey, pulling the rest of the a/c, getting a sparco steering wheel, and pulling the air bags. I will still be about 50#s over though, and even more when I add the full cage (roll bar now). I am thinking about other $tuff, but that will do for now.

Thanks,

Jim

Back to the issue of removing a spare tire and the front sitting visibly higher. I take it you have near stock spring rates. I can stand on my front bumper and the car doesn't budge.

Yeah, mine either (which is what happens with my 700# front springs )

My car has been set up without a spare and have very little in the front of the passenger compartment except for its tank and 15lb Odyssey battery.

The early cars had the spare lying on its face/back, which doesn't look like a deformable structure. I've not seen any data on the 911, but I would rather see the front end collapse on itself while leaving the passenger compartment intact. Now the 964 and later cars have the spare sitting upright and against the firewall?

In my 964T the spare lies flat. In Boxsters and 996s it sits upright.

The 964 and the 993 have the same layout. The gas tank is somewhat upright and next to the firewall, while the spare lies flat at the bottom, almost in front of the front axle.

My 92 cup usa came with a spare. I ran last year with it out for DE. I am putting it back in over the winter. I feel safer with it in there.
