Default Data Aquisition for the non-pro racer

i was wondering what your opinions on a laptimer/data system for the person who does mostly DE's and open track days. I'd like to be able 2 see my lap times and whatnot after a session but some of these sytems cost thousands of dollars.

reading over at 6speed i found this one made by aim sports: http://www.aimsports.com/products/mxl-strada/index.html

its the lowest end of their 3 models as you can read about on their website.
do any of you have any experience with the unit? Pro's/Con's?

Is there a better alternative at a more reasonable price?

Same as John here, very happy with my MyChron3, and IIRC it's a bit cheaper still than the MXL's... but the same great software.

While I have an MXL Pista, if I were buying today, as the price rose on that unit significantly, I'd go Mychron 3. I would go with the XG-Log version, for a number of reasons, like wheel mounted display, but you get get away cheaper if you don't need/want that feature or the CAN bus expansion capability.

I was very impressed with this unit:

Very nice job with the S/W and analysis capabilities. Very simple installation in a car.

My son uses a MyChron 3 on his kart. Good product and support as well.

I have an XG on my steering wheel. I removed all my stock gauges and only use the Mychron XG.

^ hehe..that's what i'd like 2 do, but i don't know if its legal or not to take the odometer out of a street car. can u configure these things 2 have an odo function as well? i don't see how this would be a problem, i mean u've got all the sensors u need)

It's on my track only car.
I don't even look at the odometer function. I do have the speed hooked up just for pit speed during an enduro.

I have a Mychron 3 on my shifter kart and an MXL Pro in the racecar. I like them both...

as is my understanding, the entry level MXL cannot be connected to a computer for data review, correct?

The Strada is the bottom of the MXL line, and has some of the limitations you would expect from an entry point model. There is no way to export data from the Strata to AIM's analytics package, so no post-run anaylsis. 128Kb memory limit will drive you crazy!

The MyChron is worth a look. There are a few other 'contenders' depending on budget. The Traqmate is quite capable, and has a GPS-derived laptime display, for under $1000. We've done some work with these and more to integrate them with Trackvision, so we get to see the good, the bad, and the ugly.

You might try this site http://www.g2extreme.com/ it has a good unit that is self contained and teh software is very good. A good entry level unit at a fair price with a lot of function.

You might also try the search button in this forum as there are some good threads about data acquisition units and the pros/cons with them.

There is currently a Traqmate system (new) being sold for a bit of a discount over on the PCA Mart:
