Fun video: near spin at Blackhawk
Shot this video this past weekend at Blackhawk Farms near Chicago. I thought I was headed for the tires so I clutched-in and was just about to slam on the brakes but somehow managed to save it (despite being off throttle). The lesson here is: "Turn in before the road does."

Eric - Were you shifting and just going back to throttle at the turn in there? And I second the "turn-in is the middle of that access road". One has to force themselves a bit to stay WAY on the outer edge of the track there (following edge all the way from previous corner 4), and then to dive-bomb in a bit as the car hits the mid-point on the access road (used to be two access roads - was easier to mark).
That's a very nice catch. Most folks that go off in 5 never travel to the outside (tires). Rather, they all end up coming back inside and riding through the grass and weeds (taller than we are) over there.
Fills the car with all sorts of leaves, seeds, and such.

Dave- yup, there were basically 2 problems: (1) I was really late shifting, so at the time I had trouble I was barely back on the gas, and (2) I was too far over and dropped a wheel off. Obviously, dropping the wheel off was the main problem. Really stupid moves for somebody who's driven the track 10 to 15 days.

Eric: I agree, the wheel drop did it. I know you know the track better than that and your turn in was not overly aggressive, it's just that with only one rear wheel .... here comes the oversteer.
Seriously nice catch.

She was watching it from the bleachers right in front of it, so she just let out a big SCREAM. I'm not sure if her scream was out of concern for me or for the car. But it really looked like I was going into the tires. The car had entered that long painful rotation that we all know...

Very nice catch. I have heard about some drivers in slides (sawing back and forth) who just let go of the wheel and the car snaps back to a straight. Has anyone ever tried this???

That was a nice save. You did overcorrect, but not too much, and that is what usually causes the big spin to the inside.
