Here is my highway tested roof rack for my 996. It may work for 997s too. Surco (on the web; or amirsurkin@surcoinc.com to email Amir) made the upper rack and rail to my sizes for a small upcharge using their Urban roof rack as the basis. The feet are from the porsche roof rack, which bolt onto blocks of metal that bolt down into the car after you open up small doors in the roof. The crossbar is, I think, the same as porsche uses, except that Surco made it longer for me so it would hold the rack properly. I added hooks on each corner for canoe-to-car lashing straps. and also used the canoe straps on each side of the tires. I made wood wheel chocks, and bolted them to the frame. I also added an aluminum X brace to the bottom of the rack, and used locktight on all the fasteners. So far I've traveled to 5 or so track events with good success.

I thought that the weight limit for the porsche roof racks was 165#. The combined weight of all tires with air for my car (2003 996 coupe) is around 170-175 lbs.
