Default are the "boys" getting along with 6 point harnesses?

just installed my 6 points (sparco/schroth t-bar 6pt) and set it up cradle style. i thought this would help the "boys" out compared to using a sub strap bar. i figured if i went through the sub hole though the seat then the 6 point had turned into a 5 point (using the porsche motorsport sub strap bar)

well i did a "test" and i felt like i was kicked in the nuts. i wonder how it would be in a real accident. how tight shoud the sub straps be?

I have the 'V' style 6pt harness (substraps attach to the camloc). My eyes tear up when I tighten the shoulder belts I'm considering changing them to a more offset style of 6pt next year.

I think your sub straps are too tight (no kidding....) Keep in mind the intent of a sub strap is to keep you body from sliding under the belts in a shunt and to keep the lap belts in place and not making jelly out of the important organs that are above you waist in aforementioned shunt. No reason I can think of to keep the lower strap so tight that it may act as birth control. I once had a problem with a new substrap that was not adjusted properly, got out on track and every time I pressed in the clutch, massive pain in the neather region, thank goodness it was not a race but DE day. Make sure all the other belts are tight and the sub has some play.

I sit on my substraps (cradle style), so any slack in the subs is slack in the shoulder belts. It feels tight when I do them up, but I don't really notice it when I'm on the track.

FWIW I too had a setup where I was sitting on the substraps and it was not a real problem on track. They pull down and backwards but the pressure was more on the side of the legs than on "the boys"...

It was close, and they had be positioned properly (the straps!) but it worked OK...

I think the only way to truly avoid all "contact" would be a sub strap that goes straight down and through the seat...

Eric

P.S. If you have a hole in the seat for a sub strap, I would think that a 6 pt or a 5 pt will be just as effective, so I personally would use the hole in the seat...

At a DE this past May I was told by the tech guys I wasted my money running a 6-point through the seat - since now all I had was a 5-point anyway.

Then again, they also told me I wasted my money buying a 2" lap belt when I could have bought a 3" in the same style.

I have used 6 points for some years and find them far better than 5 points for the "boys". Even when I cinch the belts down tight, lap belts and shoulder belts, the sub belts just tighten against my upper legs. If folks are having issues with a 6 point on the "boys", then either one of two things must be happening. One, your Boys are really, really BIG or two, your belts are not mount correct in terms of position.

When I instruct in other cars that have 5 points I am always uncomfortable or rather the "boys" are really uncomfortable. As far as people feeling that 6 points are a waste in through a seat hole, I think it does two things that I really like. 1) the "boys" do not feel the pressure with the 6 points like the 5 points. 2) the 6 point has two attachments to the car rather than one, just some added attachment dispersed a bit.

well i guess it depends on where the sub hole is on the seat. my sparco evo 2 has the sub hole slightly behind so when i tried mounting the sub belt underneath, it ended up tightening in the "area". with a sub hole that is just ahead, then i can see where the belts don't pose a problem.

i wear my lap belts like i wear jeans, low on the waist and riding on the hips. i thought this was the proper lap belt height, right? should the camlock be at the navel instead?

I installed a Schroth Titanium Hybrid II 6 point harness at the start of this season and there is ZERO issue with the boys.

http://www.schroth.com/produkte/raci..._hybrid_II.htm

(as I'm typing, my bride is standing behind me chuckling.....yeah, I know, I don't need them anymore anyways )

I am amazed at the comfort of this harness, especially the lap/crotch arrangement. Definintely the single best thing I've done this year.

ah sheeeoot! i just got these sparco harnesses too. i wonder if i can get the hybrid lap and sub belts and use them on my sparcos (since they are made by schroth and use the same camlock) but since i would replace the lap and subs i may as well replace the whole thing!

Perhaps, but if the 'boys' aren't worth it, then who is?

As a result of a rather lengthy thread some months ago regarding 5pt vs. 6pt, I decided to go with the added safety of a 6 with the sub mounted through the lapbelt holes, cradle style. Well, a few events later and I really feel more "secure" in that I feel more "planted" in my seat. Perhaps it's just mental since my thighs seem completely enveloped by belts, but it "feels safer" to me ...that and the reading I had done about the benefits of such a system. All this to say that "the boys," while rather "snugly" confined with a v-belt off the camlock, feels more noticible/uncomfortable right at buckling up, I forget them as soon as I'm off and running. Well worth the added "constraint" given the safety in the research, from what I've learned, anyway.

The 6pt belt I use has both sub-straps mounted 'V' style to the camloc, so the clip actuall sits in front of 'the boys'. I tried mounting them through the sub-hole in the seat, but every time I braked into T5a at Mosport (uphill braking, so lots of grip), I would hit the substraps, which is kinda distacting to say the least No matter how much I tightened the lap belts, I still had the problem. I didn't have it when sitting on the straps.

The 6pt belts that have the sub-straps offset to the camloc (mounted to the lapbelts) seems like a much better idea.
